He spoke for two hours each time without tiring his hearers-it is unnecessary to say that he is an enter taining lecturer. He says that he was a drunkard for twenty years; reformed seven years ago; his beer drunk four teen times since, and that be has a con stant and dreadful struggle to keep from drinking now, Mr. Benson's style.is frank and earnest. His wit and humor are irresistible. Mr. Bensort will come to Newberry agairn if he.can. He can always com mand a good audience-here. Feeble Ladies. Those languid. tiresome -sensations, causing yow-to feel scarcely able to be on:your feet; that constant drain that is takinig from your-system all-its elastick2 ly; driving the bloom froi.your cheeks* that. continual strain'upon your-vitkl force, 'rendering you irritable arnd fret ful, can easily be removed by the~use of that marvelous remedy, Hop Bitters. Irregularities and obstructions of your system are relieved at once, while the special cause of periodical pain is per manently removed. Will you -heed this?P-Cincinnati Saturday Night. Newberry Wild. - It wa's on Tuiesda*y m'oring that the noise of trampling feet, mingled with shouts of scores of men and boys were heard on the street. At first thought we supposed it a dog' fight, for there is nothing that can arouse the male popa iat.ion of Newberry quicker than a dog fight, or that Benson. was giving out "15 Years in Hell" free, gratis, for no thing, or that there was a tight chase after .a murderer, or something else; but it was none of these. There were no dogs to be seen, nor was Benson en gaged in the performance of so liberal an act, nor could any murderer be seen. B.uL the uproar increased, as did the crowd, and every -moment could be heard "there he goes, that's him." It was-exciting, we thought somebody was carrying off the new Opera House or that the price of beef had fallen. Thd coat tails of men straightened out, the rags.of un washed boys fluttered in the gale, and the cry and the rush contin ued, up, down and across the street. Suddenly there was a halt, and the crowd gathered around a poor i!ttle white tailed rabbit, which one of the boys held up to view. And this is what caused Newberry to run wild, and will continue to do so every time. Three Cheers. For sale by Dr. WV. E. Pelham. e-o-w The Late Fall. The first killing frost of the season appeared last Friday morning, Novem ber -25th, later by several weeks than has ever occurred within the memory of the oldest people. While the delay of cold weather has probably caused sickness, the effects upon the farming interests have been very beneficial. Grass has kept steadily growing, and looked as fresh and green tbe 24th of November as in May. The expense of keeping cattle and stock has thus been rendered very light; and those who have had stock to sell have been able to keep them fat and sell them at fair prices-another benefit is that we have all had good beef and mutton to eat. The effect on the cotton crop has been very favorable. This County will very likely make hundreds more bags of cot ton than would have been made had there been an early winter, or even the ordinary weather. One gentleman, who has watched the growth and develop ment of tbe "top crop" of cotton thinks that the additional amount of cotton due to the late fall will average two bales to every mule. Another great benefit has been the fine season farmers have had for gather ing hay. Taken all together the late fall has proved a great blessing to our people. WVADL.EY, EMANUEL. Co., GA., Oct. 10, 1879. Gentlemen: While attending the Gen eral Assembly this summer, I tried your Star Curine on my leg, it being affected ,with an old sore caused by a wound re c,i.ed duringa the late war. Mr. J. C. Wilson introduced a bill in the House Tuesday to amend the Char ter of Newberry. Thanks to the Committee of the State Board of Health for a copy of its address to the Legislature. Our sister town of Edgefield is rising rapidly from the ashes of her late fire, we are glad to know. Mr. Thos. B. Hammond is engaged in putting a coat of paint on the wood work of the Opera House. A young society man of Newberry tells us that there are several weddings on the tapis in this comuunity. Newberry's visitors to the Atlanta Exposition last week had a good time, and were much pleased with the sights. The special rates to Atlanta are low enough to enable nearly everybody to go. The Exposition will close the 31st. Dr. Fant will exhibit the handsomest display of Christmas goods ever shown in Newberry. Look for his advertise ment. It is a curious arrangement that com pels peop!e to go to bed at night when they are not sleepy, and get up in the morning when they are. A party was in town Monday buying up all the mutilated coin he could find. He said he shipped $800 of such coin to the mint the Saturday previous. The negro desperado Green Owens who shot and killed Charley Jackson in October has not been captured. A re ward would very likely bring him. . The State Board of Health says that three great scourges that have afflicted this country with countless woes are, bad air, bad whiskey and bad biscuits. Leslie's Popular Monthly, Leslie's Ladies Magazine, The 19th Century, or Scribner's, and Ehrich's Ladies Fasbion Book, for sale -at the HERALD Book Store. Subseribers who expect to pay in wood are .requested to bring that luxu ry-along, as it is now cold weather, and printers fiod it-hard to keep their fingers warm. -Now that you have the money to spare, place two dollars in the hands of the proprietor of the Newberry HERALD, either for that old subscription or for a new one. The many friends and acquaintances in Newberry of the Emperor William, of Germany, will be glad to learn that be is ::ecovering from his recent dan gerous illness. The County Commissioners advertise for a Keeper of the Poor House, a Phy sician for the. Poor House and -Jail; they also offer a portion of the Poor House farm for rent. The Council has received estimates of the cost of a clock for the tower. At a meeting to-night it will be determined whether to purchase a clock, and, if so, what kind, where, &c. The time for presents is nearly at hand, and the little ones are waiting so patiently for what they will-get- A pretty book from the HER A .Book Store will be very nice. Mr. J. M. Ward, of Dead Fall, brought in a large strawberry Satuirday that was just turning ripe. -Had the frost delayed a few days he would bave had a considerable quantity of straw berries. The Confederate bond craze has about petered out. Those who find themselves without bonds are the parties that lose nothing. The bonds are not worth any thing and can never, by any possibility, be of any value. The luminous match safes of Maybin & Tarrant are the best things out. One need not keep a lamp burning at night with one of these safes. They afford light enough to show where they are. Get one as we have done. The two store rooms under the Opera House were rented at public outcry by the Town Council yesterday for one year, rent to be paid quarterly in ad vance. Mr. A. Koppel rented both, the upper one at $205, the lower one at $170. We understand that all the stores in town, with probably two or three ex ceptions, will close on Christmas day. Such a thing has not happened in New berry since the Christmas of 1876, and will not be likely to occur again for five years. A beautiful specimen of Cut and Tint Printing on a Universal Press, from a Photo-Engraving, has been received from Mr. Merritt Gally, the inventor and proprietor. The print is a portrait of Robert Burns, the poet. We prize it ighly. The wrapper containing a portion of the HERALDs for Prosperity last week got burst in the mail. The scattered papers came back to this office, and were immed':tely remailed. Nobody to blame. We offer this explanation to those who did not receive their papers on time. The chairs for the Opera House have been* purchased and will arrive next week. Those for the parquette are regular opera folding chairs; those for the dress circle are common stool chairs. The galle:y has benches. As soon as the chairs are put in place and arrange ments are made for light the Hall will be ready for use. When a fa'rmer offers his cotton for sale the buyer frequently asks, How much have you been offered for this? If cotton of a certain grade is worth a certain price, why should a buyer want to know what has been offered; pro vided he is willing to pay the market price? Do the farmers always get the full market price for their cotton? .Did guano pay this year? Two far mrs rented a niantation together in Personal. Judge Peterson is in town. Col. F. A.
