:zrrn, 5arertn & ruSboi . AUGUST. 1 2 3~ 4~ 5 6< 14 5 16 17 18 19 20 t 1 3 31 SHEEP AND DOGS. We have many inquiries as to whether this or that State is adapt ed to sheep culture. The answer is generally favorable (as scarce,i any State is not suited to th< growth of some breed of sheep', but accompanied by the advice to first ascertain what are the dog t laws, in the State in question. No fact in agriculture is more fully established than the relations be tween sheep and curs. No matter what tlie climate or the pasturage. if miserable half savage dogs roam at.large, and the State provides no redress. for the losses of the sheep owner, that State is not one in which sheep-raising can undertaken with a fair prospect of success. We esteem a well bred respectable dog as highly as any one, and it is not against such that our remarks ap ply. ~-But the sparsely settled States have a large shiftless popu lation, and. as a rule the more -worthless the inhabitant, the larger xi i oTcurs does he keep.' He does not feed his brutes, and as th y are fond of mutton, he ig ' ute willing that- some one else shsuld provide it. As bearing on this point, we quote from an ad dress, made several months ago, belore the Central Kansas Bree ders'Association by Mr. F. D. Co barb the author of the excel le ieSwine ~Hsbandry, already noLieed in our columns. Mr. Ceburn is terribly in earnest, as the following will bear witness: 'Re ins like charity, should begin at h~ee and if each old shot gun, a~ket, and revolver, in Kansas, 4sbrought out from its resting, pIe; adT6r one tirne made-to'-do ser-vie for the -Lord and our peo ple, by letting the blessed san shine through some contemptible, cow ardly cur, and then traded for a long-handled fourtined manure fork, to be kept bright with a reasonable application of elbow grease, the aet would stamp the sons of the State as the most courageous, the most progressive, and highly civ ilized of any people of which we have record.'-Americanl Agricultu rist. THECoU~mi SCHooL HoUSE. There is no rural building that needs more improvement than the school house in the country. The writer's recollections of youthful school days are associated with a small, forbidding, once red, but then weather stained, and much disfig ured -'shed,' standing in a small treeless 'yard,' that was open en tirely to the road and reached by passing through a ditch that had been made by the 'workers on the road,' and left in an un inished state many years before. The interior of the school-room was <' nything but tasteful or neat anything but inspiring to the children and teacher. We will not describe the state of things as Sit is too familiar to many of the readers of the Am'erican A gricultu rist even to-day. It was but re cently that we were driving through one -of the richest and best counties of the 'Empire State,' -and came to a structhre seem ingly in its last stages of dis soluti~on, but probably 'good' for many years to come. It was a school house,' and a sorry sight, standing there close by the road side. It was a building that the adjoining farmers, would pr'onounceI unfit for a cattle shed-and in con trast with the neatly painted farm ; 2 houses and large new barns, it was an unsightly monument to the folly of man. Let us have good, :-lean, . and comfortable school houses, surrounded by neadly kept and shady lawns, and the elevating influence which they will exert up on the youth of the land will last to the end of life.-American Agri cult urist.
