JONES'. ,__ ._ _ - t: The Circus-An Immense Success. c Old John Robinson has said: "I r can't quit," and the same fascination of u the grand- concentration of genius, in p the electric-lit arena, which still holds ti the old veteran spell-bound, brought thousands of others under the canvas I, yesterday and last night, all as helpless ; as the old hero to withstand the temp- k tation:. It was m ore than weak flesh t< could overcome, and as a consequence a the whole space was jammed up to the it very ring. It did shock our modesty to 1 see the circus ladies riding around the b ring in short dresses and tights, and ti kicking up their heels in such a man ner, but as all regulated circuses will have such performances for older heads n than ours, of course we yielded a grace- t< ful acquiescence and enjoyed it to its a fullest extent. The city was crowded v all day with visitors from the surround- 'j ing towns and country who seemed to t: join most heartily with our citizens in s: giving one continuous round of applause f< from the march of the "Grand Egyp- u tian Caravan" to the last feat of the t lady Clairvoyant who told the age, nationality, color of hair and almost (i the very thoughts of those of the au- dJ dience who desired it. The barrel and ai cross, and the equestrian act by Miss j< Minnie Mark, and the light juggling of J. Riley were all good, while the cir cus of dogs' with a clown of their own, and who, by the way, acted his part to perfection, was simply astonishing. The three huge elephants, equaling in weight and beauty old "Columbus" in his better days, as well as their comic prototypes introduced by Lowlow, the b equal of Dan Rice, were highly appre eiated. George Holland, the bounding jockey and great bare-back rider, brought to mind the days of Jim Rob inson. the champion of both Europe and America We hope not to be in vidious amongst so many performers, t* but in the elegant language of our old friend "we can't quit" until wve have a aid a word in praise of the splendid four horse bare-back riding and driving b of Miss Stickney, which wvas applauded g to the echo. The menagerie contained specimens of natural history which are t seldom ever seen under canvas, the most noteworthy of all in this depart- a mnt being probably a huge alligator, which, mn his native elime, (so John Lowlow says) dines daily on young . Readjusters. Taken as a whole, we can safely say that John Robinson deserves the belt in his profession, and is now exhibiting C one of the best shows in the United States.-Lynchburg News, Vai. Mr. Girardeau took copious "notes" uring his survey, and intends to make careful and exact map of the Town. portsmen's Club. Steps are being taken to organize a portsman's club in this County, the ob sct being to see that the game laws re obeyed and their violation punished, ud to secure better laws for the pres rvation of game. No individual cares > report another for killing game out f season, and the consequence is that irds' nests are broken up and game is illed in violation of law with imp'ni J. An organization such as the one ntemplated would put a stop to this ckless destruction of game. for its icnbers would feel it their duty to re ort all violations of law and see that ie law is obeyed. The.recent amendment to the Game ,aw does not suit this section of the tate. The former law permitted the illing of bit'ds between the 15th of Oc )ber and the 15th of April; but the mendment changes the time and uiakes from the 15th of September to the 5th of March. The 15th of Septem er is too early for hunting in this see on of the State; at that season young artridges are not more than hal rown, and a real good sportsman takes o pleasure in hunting them-they are >o easily killed. If this law should re lain in force many years the birds rould be almost entirely exterminat'ed. 'hen the 15th of March is too early foi ie hunting season to close. There was an error in our public:tio of the census of 1870 for this Count, It arose in this way: In the Coin per diun, published by authority of the L S. Government, Newherry is put dow thus: Newberry, - - - 2.792 Newblerry, - - - 10 The impression was that 2.792 reprc sented the popa'hU:ion of the Town, an 1,891 that of the Township outside < Town. By referring to the head of tb columns we find that "the populatio of the Township includes that of all th towns in it"; so that 2,792 was the poi ulation of Newberry Township, inclut ing the Town of Newhlrry, as taken i 1870. ''his is verified by the fact th the population of the County in 1870 put down in the Compendium at 20 775, and that this re;i:t is obtained b not adding the 1,S91, which shows tb 1,891 is included in 2,792; in othc words, that the population of the Tow is included in that of the Townshii The population of the Town then i 1870 was 1,891; this left the populatio of the Township outside of Town oni 901 against 2,140 in 1880-but that the way it was taken. The liscrepane may be explained, in part at least, b supposing that the census-taker ft Newberry Township in 1870 was ign< rant of the limits of the Township an omitted a large portion of it, and the this portion was taken by the censu; takers of the adjoining Townships 2 an 5, for these two Townships in 1880 sho a decrease from 1870, which should n< be the case. A reference to the tab] will make the point clear. We prir this weiek the correct census of ti County for 1870 and 1880.
