The true economy of farm yar manures may be thus indicated nothing must be allowed to ru away in the form cf a fluid, or t $y awe.y in the disguise of a smel So, mark out a piece of ground < which the dung hill is to be mad on a good slope, if possible, at close by a pond. Out a gutter a round, and puddle it with clay, E as to make it water tight. Thei at the lowest part, outside the pla< where the dung hill is to lie, dig sink hole eighteen or twenty inch( deep ; let this be well puddled, an connected with the gutter alread spoken of. Things being thus pr pared, throw down a layer ofm nuring substances, about a foc deep ; tread them well down, an scatter some "fixer" (see hereafte over it; finally, water it well. I this manner go on, with layer aft layer, till the heap is the desir height. Daring the operation making the heap some water wi have drained away ; in that ca~ it will have run into the gutte and been collected in the sink hol Scuppet the water out as the wor proceeds, and throw it back on ti dunghill. If the hole is not lark enrugh, another can be made ne Sit. None of the drainings must < any account be lost. It should hav at least once a week for a mont a good quantity of fluid thro'i upon it. Pot- boilings and soa suds are much better than comin water, but the drain of the barn preferable to both. By these co trivances nothing is allowed to lea: but the dung hill becomes a so mass, holding fast all that belon~ to it except what flies away. '.I catch the latter is the purpose the "fixer." There are many kin< of fixers; oil of vitriol, green vitric blue vitriol, gypsum, &c., may 1 used; but some of them at all time and in some cases all of them, ha' the fault of costing money. substitute which costs nothing e: cept labor, is therefore,. to 1 sought for. Such exists in einde siftings, charcoal dust, good bla< earth, peat or bog mould, rott< sawdust, leaf mould, black mt from ponds, bottoms of wo< stacks, soot, brickdust, burnt cIa &c. Some or all of these may1 had in most places. - HENS IN PLACE oF DoGs. There is hardly a farmer that do not throw away enough table scra to feed at least a dozen hens, ai many that keep a nuisance in ti shape of a dog, which doesi good, but costs more than a doz< hens, complain that they cann afford to keep hens. One dog a neighborhood is generally greater trouble to the neighbo than a flock of hens would be, f if hens are well fed at home thi will-.rarely go away. But who ev saw a dog that was not a pest ai sticking his nose ir.to everything Kill off the curs and give the fo to th~e hens and you will fi: pleasure as well as profit in so doin We wish there was a tax of one hu dred dollars on every dog in t country. Those that are of val as watch-dogs could be retaine while the host of snarling, dir curs _would give place to some mo useful and less troublesome pet. [Poultry Standard. BIED'S-NEST PUDDING.-Soak teacupful of tapioca in three eu fuls of lukewarm water for five six hours, stirrin g occasionall Peel six apples, cutting them quarters and arranging them th~ hottom of the dish. or ti A RICE BREAKFAST -- CORNED BEEF HASH, CoRN BREAD.-For hash use only the best corned beef. Buy as much as you require from the round, which has l'ttle fat, and. if you choose it rightly, not much bone. Two pounds will make a hash for six persons. Boil until tender, being very careful to change the water if it. is too salty. Next morning chop the beef very fine. Do not allow any bits of fat - or gristle to go under your chop ping knife; add an equal quantity I of cold boiled potatoes and balt a small onion, also minced. Five minutes before breakfast put the hash in a block tin or porcelain saucepan, with a large lump of! butter and pepper to taste, and stir constantly until it is thorough ly heated. One or two tablespoon fuls of soup stock may be added if the bash is too dry. Mould upon a flat dish, and garnish with sprigs of parsley. The following recipe carefully followed will give excellent corn bread:-Two heaping cups of In dian meal, one cup of flour, two eggs, two and a half cups of sweet milk, one tablespoon of melted but ter and two of white sugar, two d teaspoonfuls of Sea Foam or baking 11 powder sifted through the aeal, >o and one teaspoonful of salt. Beat 1, very thoroughly and bake steadily e in a rather quick oven. a FoWLs ON THE FARm.-Fowls s often do well when colonized with d cattle at pasture, and a dry knoll Y may be excavated for a home for them. A wooden roof should be t- built over a stone foundation. Far >t mers might average 250 fowls if d all such places were made avail r) able. Boys should be encouraged n to breed and care for the chickens. r It will afford good schooling, ar-d d they will learn lessons that will be of ) great use to them when they come 11 to the breeding of animals, for the same laws are applicable to both. e They should be taught to breed r"in line," but not too close. Close -. breeding for three years will cause the eggs to unfertile. Breed every e year and change old stock for new. e Young fowls pay much better r than old ones. Brahmaas should n seldom be kept more than two yvears, if one is seeking thbe greatest Sprofit. Never keep more than one nhundred grown chickens in the Ssgme yard, and if of different ages not so many. Twelve or fifteen i are enough to occupy one coop. isOne-sided and drop-hipped birds -are produced by crow ding them ' in too close quarters. They may ft also slip their hips down by crowd ~S ing between the slats of their o coops. SWHEN TO PLOUGH DEEP.--When ithe soil is thin and the subsoil is Slacking in fertility it is better to e plo w shallow, unless one has access S, to a generons supply of muck and e barnyard manure. But when the A. soil is deep and rich and the sub <soil is full of mineral or inorganic e elements which must be exposed r. to thbe influences of frost, rain and ksunshine before tbey can be avail able to growing plants, thben plough d deep, successful nurserymen, who know that a deep, well prepared >soil is best for trees, often furnish Isome of the finest specimens of larg e > profitable farming in the cropsI which they obtain from the vacant portions of their land, whbich should ~encourage farmers to discard super-' s ficial and adopt thorough culture, pprovided always they have manure asufficient to fertilize all the soil1 lthat is turned up by tne plough. 10COST OF GROWING CROPS.-A nfarmer should know what things i cost, and how he is coming out at mthe end of a year. A celebrated a fare of Michigan, who raises a rs~ little of everything, kept a careful or account of his wheat crop this (last) - year, and after allowing for every eexpense, interest on land, wear and tear of implements, etc., he finds that wheat cests hin 72 cents per >bushel. He sold, the crop at 31 per bushel, realizing a profit of '28 cents, which he regarded as n-very satisfactory. e [Germantown Telegraph. d] AACARoNI.-Take half a pound of macaroni and stew in a sauce epan of boiling water slightly sal ted, until soft and tender. When drain ed, put a layer in a baking dish, and grate over it a layer of cheese, a adding bits of butter. Put layer p. upon layer until the dish is filled, :rfinishing with a layer of cheese y.and a half cup of milk. Bake~ in covered half an hour, then brown' in and serve in same dish. n,.. ~ r'.. -- - -- .7liscelaneous. In Engla and other countries, where heavy penalt are imposed, and an increasing vigilan practiced to detect and punish such frant by a system of inspection of all malt liquc manufactured before exposed to sale, t practice is very common. How much ma in this country, where there are no laws i the subject, and no officer to carefully at lyze the products of the brewery? Sor years ago, Professor Mapes, of New Yor analyzed the beer from a dozen differe breweries, and all were found adulterati with noxious substances. It is said that t] sale of drugs to brewers is a profitable pa of the trade. This is perfectly infamot Cocculus indicus, (fish-berry,) nux vomic (dog-button, from which strychnine is o tained,) are some of the deiectable substanc found in beer! These are potent poison and the brewer found using them should 1 drowned at once in one of his own val The British Parliament passed a law to pt vent this nefarious business. The followit is an extract: 'No druggist, vender of i dealer in drugs, or chemist, or any oth person, shall sell or deliver to any licens< brewer, dealer in or retailer of beer, knowit them to be such, or shall sell or deliver any person on account of, or in tras t for, at such brewer, dealer or retailer, any liqu called by the name of r sold for colorin from whatever material the same may I made; or any material or preparation oth than unground brown malt, for the darke ing the color of worts beer, or any molasse vitriol, honey, quassia, coccolus indicu grains of paradise, Guinea pepper, or opiut or any extract or preparation of molasses, any article or preparation to be used in wot beer for or as a substitute for malt or hop and if any druggist shall offend in any of the particulars, such preparation, &c., shall 1 forfeited, and may be seized by any officer i excise, and the person so offending shall fc feit five hundred pounds.' "Under this law, very many druggists at brewers were brought to grief, and yet il practice continues. Unless the America public are ready to admit the immacula purity and innocence of American brewer they must be content, while drinking the beer, to cherish the belief that they are at tl same time guzzling some narcotic poison i damaging medicine. In view of the unpt cedented growth of the barley crop; of tl great increase of the number of malsters at brewers; of the vast unknown quantities beer that are drunk in every city and almo every town on the continent, it is the dicta W.
