Walsh wil preach in Temperance Hall every night this week at 7 o'clock, and at 11 A.M. and 7 P.M. on Sunday. The public are cordially invited to at tend. FINE TRNIPS.-Our thanks are given to the Rev. J. A. Sligh for a bountiful supply of turnips of the yellow and white varieties, and the largest in size that we have as yet seen. He has an acre of them which will compare with the best in the county. OYSs. -Lovers of oysters are ad vised that rt John D. Batemnan, so favorably kn wn in this section, is now in constant supply, and that all orders -i2th the cash will be promptly attended Pto for any quantity1 with the certainty that he will send none but the very best. A voice was heard the other day, and it said in loud and strong tones, "I'm a man, and can whip Edgefield and New berry any day." Supposing him to be a giant belonging to the circus we. slipped down stairs to look at him. It was a disappointmerit to find him only a little fellow very much enthused. Thursday afternoon two fierce-look ing gentlemen,1mounted on fine horses, and armed - With double-barreled shot guns, were seens~ charging down the street at a furious rate. We thought the '-ht-u democracy" were going to the front; but they were only going out to practice on some birds. ACCIDENTAL SHObTING.-We learn that a grandchild of Mr. Thomas Bur nett's was accidentally shot at the house of Mr. Wallace Riser, at Jalapa, on Thursday the 16th. A y6ung man passing through the door had his pistol to strike against the casing, when it ex ploded, the ball striking the child in the1 side. The wound was not dangerous. If you have a friend with a cough or cold, tell him to try Dr. Bull's Cough Syrap. He will dhank you for your advice. The price is only 25 cents. MRt. C. J. LAUREY, one of the rising men of Columbia, has a card in this issue of the HERALD, and we advise our readers to examine it. His lines of goods are of the pcopular character, and all who send him orders for either fruits, vegetables, groceries, etc., will feel that their lines have been cast in pleas ant places. ~DRr GOODS AND M.uNERtY.-We invite attention to the adfertisemnent of Mr. J. H. Kinard, of CYolumbia, in this issue. His reputation in the Dry Goods line is well known to the citizens of the up-country. Ladies visiting the city either before on during the two great events soon to take place-Hampton's inauguration and the State Fair-will do well to give his establishment a call, and be sure to look in at the ,Millinery department._____ GRASSHOPPERS. -Wednesday night last, about 7 1-2 o'clock, a big shower of grasshoppers fell in town. Nobody knew whence they came nor whither they were going. Our citizens of a *scientific turn of mind gathered up a number of them and placed them in bottles for their museum. Some of the colored people were heard to say on election day that they would rather live on grasshoppars under Chamberlain th.a n meat unde H. amptn; sand per AMITY LODGE, NO. 67, A.'. .. M-' The next regular meeting of this Lodge will be held December 4th at 7 P. M. This being the constitutional night for election of officers and pay ment of dues, members will govein themselves accordingly. JUsIUS E. CHAPMAN, Secretary. Nov. 21st, 1876--2t. ALMOST A FIRE.-Ahout half-past one o'clock on last Tuesday, the alarm of fire was given from the residence of Mrs. N. A. Hunter, which fortunately being discovered in time was easily ex tinguished and, save the fright to the family, no damage was done. Whether accidental or the work of an incendiary is not known; strange to say, however, it caught under the house and near the fireplace. The prompt rally of citizens, white and colored, is commendable, as also the quick time made by the Hook and Ladder Company. A MATC1 EXPLoDED.-Not a love match, however, but a lucifer. Mr. W. U. Sligh, of Jalapa, informs us that while ginning a few days ago he was tartled by a sudden explosion in the loose cotton; which for a moment 3eemed to threaten considerable dam age, but strange to *say, further than the noise and a momentary bright flash mothing resulted from it. It was caused rrom a match in the cotton; how it came there he could not ascertain. It was a nost fortunate and lucky .iscpe,, and we congratulate , our energetic young Jalapaian that he sustained no loss. COW-STEAUNG.-MrS. Wicker, liv ing a few miles from town, missed her Iree cows a few days ago, and her brother, Mr. McCullough, went in ;arch of them. One cow was found %live; the other two had been killed. A search warrant was taken out, and iome beef was found in the gin-house >n the Seig place, and more biied in % negro's garden on Maj. Kinard's P-labtation, which was identified 6y neans of thhide and feet. as having een Mrs. W's cows. Some pork was .so found with the beef. A negro man .nd two women were brought into town Wednesday and placed in jail, charged with the stealing. GooDs STOLE -Thursday night Col. '. J. ips6m'b lost about $60 worth of ;oods from his store, 'consisting of cal ~co, boots. shoes, clothing, &c. lie sent rooks Abrams, a colored boy, to lock he cellar door; but Brooks ~left tt un ocked, and at night, he, with Jim rown and Peter Williams, went into be store through the cellar and carried ff the goods. Col. Lipscomb recog dized. the coat on Brooks Sunday. Jim rown was found with a pair of the oots on. A bolt of calico, some shoes ad other articles were found in the ouse of Nellie Grazier, where Brooks iad carried them for concealment. The arties have been arrested and taken efore a Trial Justice. Before Radical legislation in jouth Carolina the total election ex enses, all things included, were ~000.00. BOUT THE TowN AND CoUNTY. The weather continues, And so do the Democratic majorities. With 'loden and Hampton, the good ~ime so long talked about will come. We begin to feel it ali-eady-what a nan has in his pocket will be his own tfter his honest debts are paid. This nludes what is owing to the HERALD. The long-desired rain set in Thurs lay night. Sow your wheat. The town cart will be kept busy from his time till spring hauling sand. It snowved a little in town Sunday ight. Rev. R. A. Fair preached at Abbe 'ile Saturday and Sunday. The circus has come arid gone. Those vho saw it. were very much pleased.
