Let then 'pall back' on some of their shortcom ings first, before they read the ladie4 fearful lectures on vilat is evidently good one." - CALA3ITY.-We have been informe( by a subscriber living at Ridgeway that a highly respected colored mar named Harry McMekin, in that neigh borhood, had his barn bu.ned. togethei with four males, two horses, and all o his farming implements, geav-ng, 1ougl food. &c., about two weeks ago. Th( fire was 02e work of an incendiary, anc no doubt by the hand of one cf his col ore:l brei.hren, who was jealoas of hi, success and good standing. It is a pit. that some of these midnight burner and murderers could not fall into th< hands of Judge Lynch. They do no deserve t; jal or hanging by the slov and uoce,-Lain process of law. Thel should be hung to the first Lee. A DESIDERAmI11,-Mr. John Elkins of Alston, presented us on Wednesdai last, with one of his patent Whifietrees which we think the best invention o the tiie. By its use a horse can be in stantly released from a buggy and raz his legs off if disposed to, without dam age to the occupants of the vehicle. I is not only a safe thing for rouawal horses, but it will also prove a grea coniev-ence where the animal has to bi lefl standing, as the d.-iver on aligho; can detach him from the buggy withou any trouble or loss of time. We wil not at.empt a dese.piion of this ver; useful article, but will take pleasure ij showing itto the readers of the HE.A U Walk up stairs and ask to see Elkir patent Whiflietree. ._u.oHON N -T OuBLE.-News of distressing character has reached u from Mollohon-the blackberry cro will be a failure, the late cold sna proving too much for the advanced cox diton of the vine. Oair informant say that the farmers bad built their hope on this c--op, and this with the lossc corn which had been planted, will thro' them on cotion, which they will now g for with redoubled vim. Though sortE ly <distressed at Lhe thought of missia their main stay, beeries- they feel th: all is not lost while they have codo seed and free laoo-. The speakers and subljects were as follows: Mr. J. Brooks Wingard, from Lexing ton County, S. C. Subject-the affirma tive of the question-"Will the Govern ment of the United States fall into decay as have the great governments of an 6 tiquity?" Mr. William J. Neville, from Oconee County, S. C. Subject-the negative of the above. Mr. John C. Watkins, from Anderson County, S. C. Subject-"The Centen nial." We gather from the Courier with satisfaction that "each acquitted himself with immense credit to himself and pleasure to the audience, as were evinced by the profound attention paid to the speakers while on the rostrum, as well as by the hearty bursts of ap plause and lovely bouquets, only less beartiful, we venture the assertion, to t the enviable recipients than the fasci naLing eyes that charmed and drew them from the earth, with which they were greeted on retiring." M 15, 11-1m t 1 THE MARKET.-A visit to .the mar ket on Saturday morning brought tears I to the eves of this local. The butchers were melancholy, but fortanately there were only two on duty, snd one of these stood under the leafless branches of a tree, scraping the mud from his shoes. a The meat looked blue and water-logged. It had rained heavily during the night, P aind the plank roofs had let the 'Water P through just as easy as if these honest beef purveyors had failed to.pay rent. s It was a sad sight. Inside the stills the s ground floor had softened under the in fluence of the leak into slop. The butchers were not the only mourners, for the cheap boarding house women were in deep grief and smoke. Their es tablishments looked wet, stoves smoked, Lt the lard with which they fried No. 4 mackerel splattered, their fritters would snot rise worth a cenit, and their boardere ~unfeelingly called for planks to keei d their No. 10 brogans out of the mud. To say that' our sympathies wert e aronsed feebly expresses what we fell while the sufferers pressed around and s begged us to call the attention of th City Council to this matter, and prevai on them to cover the market with shin' gles. We trust that the.petii, ion of the market tenants will be heard, especiall3 d now that shingles are so cheap. ABOUT THE TOWN AND COUNTY. A few more subscribers will be gladly received. We do not despair of better times,. when papers are subscribed and paid for. The farmers of Newberry have buck led down to their work in real good earnest. If ever they meant business they do so now, and we trust they will have good crops and money to spare next fall. Giles Gray, a colored man, died on the 11th inst., at Prosperity from wounds received by falling into a trestle while on his way to see Thompson hanged. We are pleased to learn that Mr. A. J. Livingston, who lately received in juries by his horse running away, is rapidly recovering. His horse took fright at the Laurens train and ran a considerable distance, finally throwing him into a creek of water. The public square presented as lively an appearance on Monday last as if it had been a sale-day occasion. There was a smari sprinkling of cotton on the market and buyers were animated. Sunday last was a charming day, and the various churches open were well attended. The store formerly occupied by A. D. Lovelace, and.so longed closed, is hap pily opened, its wide-spread doors in vite entrance, and the bright sunlight shining in dispels the previous gloOm. It is pleasant to look aeross from our sanctum and see it opened. The Messrs. They are certe inly pre pared to accommodate the public va riously. Our thanks are tendered for favors. The voice of the turtle dove is again heard in the land, the air is laden with pungent odours of all the approved va rieties of fertilizers, farmers are busy, cotton brokers are making calculations as to the future, bacon is going up, mechants and farmers are expectant, boys and girls are eating Philopenas tgether, and the Newberry HERALD is still offered at the low rate of $2.50. There is nouse for despond.ency under these circumnstances. -At the esalsmn of Messrs. Kings land-& Heath,.
