Tile tables f the Columbia are supplied in the ery best style, everything available eing furnished for the delectation of ic palate, and this is not all, for the leeping arrangements are also carefully ttended to that no possible discomfort may be felt by the lodger. We were leased on a late visit to behold the enial Gadsden in his accustomed place, > whom and Mr. Gorman we feel in [ebted for many marked courtesies. TO TIE PEOPLE OF NEWBERNZY, and e ladies especially, the card of the Leader of Low Prices" will prove rghly interesting. C. F. Jackson is bie man for the tinies, without a ques ion, for instead of getting into a drng e sets his pegs and pushes straight head with such energy and foresight 3at he invariably wins. His announee ient now of a reduction in price of ar les previously sold at the Low Price gure will make a sensation, as it biould. If the reader cannot conven mtly go down to the city, an order an be sent, which will receive prompt ttentionl if addressed to him at No. 28 Main street, Columbia, S. C. NEW BUSINESS.-If things continue s at present, we will be forced to add nother branch to our business. So -ret is tIhe accumulation of cravats that r arc at a loss what to do with them, nd if others would follow tihe practice f C. F. Jackson, of Columbia, in pre nting us one of his best every time ce visit the city, it would be a whole ale instead of a retail business. We omtimes wvonder if he imagines we ive on cravats. Whatever his thoughts, lowever, it is passing strange that it is dwas cravats. Perhaps he has the iope of choking us off. It matters not, hoghl, our cry is "Lay on Macduff, ,nd - be he who first cries hold, nough," and we shall open a first class ravat house as soon as fair weather sets n. If he has no objection, a pair of uspenders b)y way of variety will make is happy. The Crockery and House-Furnishing ~stablishment of Messrs. For tile seed we tre under many obligations to our riend E. E., but as Newberry is now a heet of mud it would be vain to plant t this tune. We have thought the matter over and over. and can only conclude that it has become so because the HERALD is put to press on that day, and of all the days in the week it is our busiest, and, therefore, in a pure spirit of perversity everything unusual hap pens on that day, and if there is any thing to be done which could be (lone at any other time, Tuesday is the day selected in preference to all others. But one time in our experience has a circus ever visited Newberry on any other day-and the consequence always has been that our naturally demoral ized devils get entirely beyond control. The Bell Ringers come on Tuesday. Every advertiser in town brings in his card on that day. If a man wants to hunt up a notice published eight or ten years ago, he waits until Tuesdav. If a drayman is due ten cents for deliver ing a package he is sure to come in at that time. If a fellow don't want any thing particular he is sure to call on Tuesday. The Sons of Temperance meet on that night, but our conduct has been so intemperate through the day it would be a sin were we to attend. If a robbery, or murder, or distinguisbed death occurs. it happens just after we go to press on Tuesday, and the news is stale ere another publication day. If an invitation is extended to us to eat anybody's big dinner or see a couple married, the time is Tuesday, But why enumerate further. Of all days in the week Tuesday is the most trying, yet so accustomed are we to the pressure, that if, as it sometimes happens, nothing oc cars, we hunt something up. It is re warkable that Christmas does not of tener occur on Tuesday, and Thanks. giving never. All perpons in any wise indebted to me, are called upon to set tie before the 1st of! February. L o n g e r indulgence will not be given. S. F. F ANT. Jan. 13, 2--3t. AOUT THlE TowN AND COUNTY. The weather since last issue has been variously good, bad and indifferent. Just now it halts between two opinions, and as the clerk is not able to cast a vote it is impossible to say how it will turn out. This is an unfavorable time to put seed in the ground-if you have more on hand than needed, however, you can~ commnience gaLrdening.I Business since Christmas has been uncommonly dull. No one comes in from the country unless forced to do so. Because we had an invitation to a turkey and chicken salad dinner, with fruit cake and other nice things added one of our non-paying patrons begged us to treat him. We could not see it. A drover who could not sell out on foot, slaughtered here last Tuesday, and spare ribs, back bones, &c., were plen tiful. Persons going into churches should enter quietly after closing doors softly. A noisy entrance makes people turn their heads. A Chicago shirt dealer advertises, "Buy from me or TI'l bust." Likewise will we if those who owe do not pay It is remarked that girls who dress "loud" soon come to talk andi act loud. A friend could not go to Columbia on Friday last, because his linen was all out. A pair' of mluddly boots were found in the cellar of a store in town on Monday last, and as the door was also found open the inference is that burglars were at work. Loss, if any, not known. Do not laugh boisterously loud unless yu cainnot p)ossibly help it. It is vul gar, in spite of the advice to laugh and grow fat. The order of the (lay now is home hunting. This is the p)rincipal buisiness with the colored p)eop)le. We hope they may all get good la:ces..I Every ma:n indecbted to this office is cardially invited to come and settle. We trust the advice will be taiken to kindly. It is foolish in the extreme to get mad about it. Cash subscribers only are wanted for the year 1875. If you have no money. bring chickens, eggs, wood, fodder, corn, &c., but (10 not ask for time. We cannot gi-e it. Job work from this (late must be paid for before delivery. The Book Store is also run on the strictly cash p)rnciple--no charges made. Troubles arc like dogs, the smaller they are the more they annoy you. The scarcity of locals last week was caused by the crowing of a game chick en in the rear of our office. It was i possible to write under the circum stances. A double-fisted Dutchman breaking up flour barrels for kindling wood, sent our wits wool-gathering about the same time. In the extremity a lodge in some vast wilderness wvould have been a para dise. The sun shone out on Thursday morn ing, and the glint of its beams on the sheets of mud in the streets was an un usual sight. Carpenters and bricklayers have had holiday since Chiristnmas-fortunate fel lows. This reminds us that some one adver tises on the street lamp post that 400 caim wnta fr an The Newberry Hotel is again in the hands of Mr. J. P. H1E (not Major Reese, but the other man,) was in town ag:tin : few days ago and wever satd a word about his back due sub-zeription. We know not what to make of such a i:an. A lady visitor to our Book Store. who is t close reader of the wEuAw, won dered lately how we could write so cheerfully while the weather was so ( bad. Tle only reason we can :Lssign for it is that some kind-hearted crea tures are :lways coluing in to pay their dues. Thiisis wl:it keeps il) our spirits. Otherwise we would collapse. Court is in full blast. Some of the 0 jurymen think it a blasted shaine that thev are obliged to sit when they would ratfier stand up or walk about. We t think it a good way to cure: a man of h laziness. A short man became attached to a tall wouan. and somebody said that he had fitu in love with her. "Do you Lll it falling in love?" said the suitor; "it's more like climbing up to it." le lushed a fierv red, Her heart went pit-a-p:tt; She gently hung her head Anld looked down at the mat. He trembled in his speech; le rose from where he sat, And shouted with a screech, "You're sitting on my hat!" A Soituy 1EFE.NCE.-Tlie Presi dent's message is just about such a document as uiight have been expected. It coribines in baly proportions Landaulet Williaws' law and Grant's temper and ratiocination. There is t nothiR, in it t9 touch the heart or mind of the p ople. It is eminently and only adapted ',o the meridian of those who hate the South, ill the de gree that they have injured her, or the flunkies who would like to wear p!ush livery at the court of Ulysses the 1st.-'hlwn ix. Reliable Testimony, It cannot bc reasonably supposed that when a person testifies to the effleacy of a remedy whose benetits be has experienced, without solicitation, that he does so for the purpose of I mnisleading the public, or from any other mo tive than that of gratitude. It is still more j unreasonable to stippose that eminent physi cians would corroborate the evidence thus given unless they were persuaded oi its tru t. The proprietors of Hostetter's Stomach Bit ters are constantly in the receipt of voluntaty testimonials acknowledging the curative and preventive potency of this beneficant tonic C and corrective, cmanating not only from those who have t'elt its influence, but also from well known members of the tiedical profession, both here and abroad, who have witnessed its effects, and prescribed it in their private practice. In the face of such evidence as this, to which the widest publicity has repeatedly been given, it would he absurd to question the medicin al virtues of the Bitters. Skepti cism upon this point was long ago disarmed, and they are to.day as much respected and far more widely known than many of the officinal remedies which figure conspicuously in the plharmacopeia. They are universally recognized to be the supreme remedy fcr in termittent and retnittent fevers, dyspepsia, liver complaints, general debility, disorders of the bowels and nervousness, as well as a means of fortify ing the systetn against mala. rious influences, and those which operate in- a juriously upon the sensitive organs. Whether I sed as a rernedy for actual disease, as ae neans of building up the broken dIown physique, or of hastening convalescence, thecy are never resorted to in vain, and they often restore complete health when prescribedn reedies cainet even i0itiate-its recovery.
