Henderson was so frightened that he did not recog nize any of the party, and was unable to tell for certain whether tile men were * id~t,e or colored. lHe thinks they were white. He says he is satisfied that the cause of the shooting is purely personal and has nothing whatever to do with politics. - MERCHAN-TS PROTECTIVE ASSOCIA -ro.W learn that the merchaints of( our town have organized an association, t the objects of which are the promotion of the mercantile and industrial inter- I ests of Newberry, and the mutual pro tection of its merchants. THOMAs.-This deserv lly popular gentleman spoke his lec ire on South Carolina, to an intelligent idience, in this place, last Wednesday ,ening, the 2d1 of September. The lecture has been carefully pre tred and is well worth hearing. The eturer means to do good. The lee re ought to do good. It appeals to 1 the high feelings of the living South arolinian. By a rehearsal of the past story of the State; by a recitation of ie deeds of her sons in the late grand ar-which some call a rebellion-but hich he properly makes the Providen A means to overthrow the existing -stm of slavery in the United States, at had wrought its destined good ; the eturer educes from the past a line of mduct for the future that ought to win. This line of .Jonduct he bases, proper -aga, upon facts that can not be de led. For while conceding that South arolina was right-with the lights be re her-to make Secssion, while she :alked States Rights grandly," other ates, New York for example, "work I them out." This is the philosophy of Col. Thomn ~lecture: With a Past, equal at least to that of reece or Rome, with a Present that apartial history nmst praise for its for arance-the sons of the "Prostrate :ate" for a Future must be incited to Leit action by a love of the Past and a msideration of the Present. But that ye must be tempered by a proper ap reciation of the heroes of the Past, that ey were simply making Glory; that nsideration must be taken as the best 'e can do under the circumstances. tthe same time the lessons the Past yes us-which mean Heritage; the sons which the Present affords ich mean the paience of breeding: must not be lost in a "masterly inactiv v." For the lecturer said there was a such phrase in any E conomy. We will not go further into the an yysis of the lecturer's programme. What he said be said well. While a has gone beyond the borders of the tate for a livelihood, lhe is, as lie says -if not in his own language-near 2ough to desire to help his native Comn tnwealts, either by his moral or phy al action. Morally he desires to do by training the youth of South Caro a for those practical pursuits that he tinks, properly again, may redeem. er. If need be-but that can not come >on; for revolutions, political or other, o not follow fast in a country of such xtant as ours-he would risk his life gain among his brothers. Commonwealth! The lecturer used e word affectionately. May we all ye to see another Commonwealth of outh Carolina! J'BOUT THE TOWN AND COUNTY. The rust is injuring the cotton very mueh in this County, especially below 'rosperity. Mr. Julius Smith has contracted to ud his brick store three stories high, 'te third story to he used as an Odd 'ellow's Hall. A. A. Nathan has quit the ice busi ess and gone to general merchandi ing. His place of business is the store >rmerly occupied by Abrams & Metts. The workmen laying the new T. rail n the Greenville & Columbia R. R., av reached Colony Church. There is a man in this County who rumbles because his wife has gone to ee her people, and for spite feeds the itns on the floor. He lives on but Drmilk during her absence. A few of our merchants have return di from the North, oth3rs still absent, ndd more preparing to go. We beg the fox hunters of our Coun y not to run foxes in the direction of ouumbia. It makes the rads down here nervous to hear the horns. If a man gives a barbecue and charges ft ents a head, and it rains hard that Lay, don't ask him any questions, please. There are so many beautiful things too, in nature as well as in art, man kind ought to be very happy. Yet alas. too frequently do we overlook them, and see through a glass darkly the re verse side of the picture, and were it not for the aneliorating help of the philanthropist who aids us to see the bes. side of the picture, and who hangs out signs so plain that none but the blind can fail to read them, sad would he the condition. One of these signs, hung like a banner upon the outward wall, is that displayed by Messrs. Perry & Slawson, proprietors of the popular Cigar and Tobacco Store, in the attrac tive form of the Indian Girl. -At this store the connoisseur of the weed who is able to pay for an expensive luxury can exclaim, Eureka, and as well can the man of moderate means, who also delights in a fragrant puff at a trifle less expense, be made happy. All can pulff, ptff, ptuff, at Perry & Slawson's, and looking benignantly at the Indian Girl, feel that the world is not sohad as people represent it. Remember the place, Main street, Columbia. tf. ED;CAT]oN OF TIlF SEXEs.--It the discussion at the National Edu entional Convention at Detroit recent iv on the edaecation of the sexes, the eight of argument semed to be mginust the comuiini gling of males and femtiale s.-Professor Orton of Vassor Coleize, one of the most successful female colleges in the world, gave it as his opinion that young men and women could not study side by side without detriment to tihe women. Un til girls would compete in outside sports they should not compete in tile school room. Professor Hosmer, of the Wiscotnsin University, read a pa per on "The co-education of the sexes it Universities." He had been eight years connected with mixed institu tios, and had extensive acquaint ane with professors in siumiliar insti tions, and the efleet. both of observa tion and experience, was decidedly averse to the coniingiirg of the sexes ill the Universities. He said L-at their education.wmight be success ful if their association was limiied to the class room; but when it extended to the table and led to familiar inter course, it would be a disastrous failure. It is so obvious that physical and constitc tional vigor is the best defense against dis ease, that even the vendors of drastic purga tives advertise them as tonics, stomachics and invigorants, in the hope of' enlisting the confidence of the public in the devitalizing and pernicious po'ions. It is amusing to note how these impostors imitate and copy the language in which the medicinal proper ties of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters are de scribed. Although the effect of their rasping evacuants is to destroy the tone of the diges tive organs and the boweis, and to rob the system of its vital strength, they are unscra putosly recommended to the weak and pros trate vic:tms of disease as stimulants! It is time th is humbug (not a very successful one it is true, thanks to the mature common sense of the American people) was stigma tized as it deserves. Such mnischievous false hoods should be exposed pro bono publico. Hlostetter's Stomach Bitre~s, be it d istinctly understood, is a stimulant. It h'ss a spiritu ous asis, and that basis is the v-ehiele which diffuses its wouderful sanitary principles throu:th every~ part of the system. The tonIe, alterative and regulating ingredients .of ite Bitters would be comparatively inert if they were not, so to speamk, cat ried to the localites where they are required by- the stimulatinir agent. The cant which protests against the nile of a pure alcoholic fluid, when emnplo.yed as a means of giving full effect to medicinal extracts of the highest utility, is the cant, of cmar:Ianism. Every intelligent phtysician so chara, cterizes it, and the sick who are griped, convulsed and debilitated hby the naut scous and dihagustintg nos:rums of the parties who put it forth1, soon find to:their sorrow hat it is a delusion and a snare. liostctter's Bitters, the g:emt sanitary stimuhmtn of the age, is, in the tritest sense of the words, a wholesome, vitalizing, renov atotg prepara tion. 35-5t. It is Not Generally Known That the shortest possible route between the South and Great West is thr-ough St. ouis, over the St. Louis, Kansas City and Northern Short Line.
