Ahvie from New Orleans speak in glein -terms of the increase in the ri6e. eqture in that State, and represint that it pays a more reli able prbfrt than the cultivation of sugar-cane. In 1872 Louisiana prodied about 23 per cent. of the whole American rice crop, and in 1873 her percentage was higher still. But the General American production of rice has fallen off heavily, as will be seen by the fol lowing figures from the census: Urop of 1850................215,313,097 pound]si. Crop of 1S60............187.1GT.032 pounds. Crop of '1870.............73,G3,021 pounds. The following figures show the exports of domestic and the imports of foreign rice: Imports. The area embraces the two Corolinas, Georgia and Louisiana, the crops of which in tierces are given thus: 1870. 1871. 1872. North Carolina ...... 700 500 600 South Carolina........44,073 42.842 45,000 Georgia.............21.393 11,250 19.400 oisiana.. .........16,700 14,500 19,500 Carolina rice brings a better price than that from India, and is always a preferred article both at home and abroad. Hence nothing hut the cheapness and abundance of the Indian rice could have secu red for it the control of the Euro pean and American markets. From the figures we give, which are quoted from a mercantile circular, it will be seen that Carolina is still the great leading rice State. Lou isiana is making steady progress, and has so large a breadth of surface available for the crop that it is be coming a leading interest there. In Florida, where the area available for the rice culture is considerable, nothing has been done, in conse quence of the smallness of the population. If the attention now directed to the subject since the Indian famine set in could be made practical, the rice culture might be extended over alil the regions referrcd to, and the American i-ice crop regain the great proportions it atttain"d in 1850, for it is not to 1860 we must look back as the most p)ros perous year, the culture having al ready suffered before 1860, as be fore noticed. The fact that Amner ian rice was expoirtedl during tihe whole. period of. its decline arose froi its being a superior article. The Inianif riee doina:tes the mark e't only, through its cheapness and4 abiundlance, anid this being~ now cut off by the f:unine the openling [Phila. The Turkish proverb has it, that 'a prudent woman is a mine of -9 jewels,' and, like many other Ori ental sayings, this is beautiful for the truth it embodies. A waste ful housekeeper not only actually robs those of whom she undertakes to manage, of the comforts it is her daty to provide for them, but keeps her husband head over ears: in debt, and makes the domestic life of a poor man a continual se- C ries of experiments in ghinning it from one day to the next; in keep ing the stomach full though the purse be empty." to STICKING PEAS.-A Correspon dent of a London paper makes a, ot suggestion as to sticking peas which is -orthy of trial. He thinks that "to those who have to procure stakes at a great cost the following B. method will prove advantageous, being very cheap, simple, and easi- M ly performed. A few rough stakes o0 siould be obtained and driven into the ground on either side of the i row, about twelve feet apart. These stakes should be of a corres ponding height to that of the peas, and when the required number for ;I a line is inserted, some tar twine P or other strong cord may be tied C to the end stake, and passed along i the line of stakes, making a turn . on each within a few inches of the F. ground, and as growth progresses, C. raise the next turn a little higher, advancing in succession until the plants attain their full height.- , These lines being run~j on at the right time, the tendrils of the pe is will clasp firmnly round them and support the plants quite equal to the well-known plan of sticking. Some imagine an advantage to be obtained in this way of training, as the vines get a better circulation of air, and podls cani be gathered at all times without intjurinig the hauhin.' How To RAISE GmIcmEs.-My practice in raising chickens is, to take them from the lien, then dig up the soil and( pac the coop on the fresh dirt, then put the chick ens back, and( the lhen will roll in the dust and get the liee off much better than on grass land. I have tried both ways, and find the fresh dirt mnuch the best for thge health of the hen anid chickens. In some instances I have used hog's lard for greasing the lien's wings and the head of the chick, thinking it a. good way to kill lice. That and the fresh dirt and the liglht kind, of food have raised my chickeuis. w The food I give, till ti y are three li 'Jr four weeks old!, is TudiaLn meal i d mixed withi sour milk.
