The Tax. For the week past there has been litle else~talked about or thought of witside the enormous amount each tax p..yer of this County is ,xpectcd to p:!v into the Treasurer's office. The tiures are stUriling, and ilen are sick the exor'):tant demand made upon them. The tax has been swelling gradually for years, each gathering ijeiug heavier than the one preceding; with that experience the tax payer, growing accustomed to it, and expe-'L ing nothing else, paid up his tax with ai good grace as possible, but -iow at o;*_ fell swcp the amount is DOUBLED, and men who had prepared themselves to pay according to the levy made by the Legislature, find to their bitter disappolutment, to their consternation, that their assessments rendered in on oath. have in nearly every c3se been wuade twice as high. The amounts which they expected to pay and had ltid by for this purpose out of their scanty earaings, they find is but half enough. With many this will invol !e ruin. and more especially com ing in a timle of stringency like the presnt. If the oaths of the people are not c-nsidered, why we ask were livy e:dled for, why should they niake a return ? It would have been as well, or better, for the Assessors to h(ve joue to work with their books 61.:d the ligh1ts before them, and fixed up this gross fraud without troubliug the people at all. The res.ult thein i1ight have been anticipated, and the fax payers woul-I either have prepared fwr the worst by siviug all of their imocy, or have consulted together f,r the purpose of testing it. The thing is mnntrous'. We have even heard iL said, but knwv not if it be true. that the Comnptrollkr Giener:d ackncowl edgzes that the demiand upon Newberry is excessively large. W~e give himc credit fihr saying so. and hope that he did. It looks very nmh ncow as if the fable of the goose which laid the golden egg is to be rehearsed-th:at thle insatiable greed can not wait the slower if not surer process of the past few years, and that now the exaetin is for alhl. We gave the Republicani pr.rty credit for imore foresight, and that they would have instructed the army ot assessors, arbitrators. gathuer ers, &c., to have been muore careful, and net to scare the pirey by maki~ig tooc r::sh and exorbitant a demand. BuXt we are ruistaken, and we doubt not ihev will finid themnselves mistaken also. for there is a point beyond which endc.ural]ce ceases to be a virtue, anid it seems as si that point is reached Treatment of Imumigranats. It is very true the immigration novemnit is no work of beoevolence to foreiumers. Self is the most promi neut figire in this, as in everything else. But the very best way to serve self is to e.xtend the hand of friendship to the strangers, and not to withdraw it as soon as they have accepted it and come here on the faith of it. We give the land owners of South Carolina the eredit of having suffi cient shrewdness to seize upon the ad vanltage now in their power. We hopo soon to see an immigration so ciety in every county of the State, and a determinati-n to muke a friend of every foreigner who sees fit to east his lot in South Carolina. Let not this niovement be a bubble of caprice, a mushrooi notion, a thin whim, to be -bursted, smas- ed and dispersed at the first blow of difficulty, but a resolute determination. the offspriig of neces sitv. unalteruble and indefatigable. Brief Mentions. A nunnber of the tax.payers of Marion County had a meeting on the 6th inst., to consider the assessment of the Board of Equalization, which thwy unani:nously resolved was enor ul.us. ANswERS TO COmmHESPONDEN.-We have no doubt that many of our read ers are at times in more or less diflicul ty. and long for a word of advice. It is quite conmon too to bring these troi bles to the editor. It is not the fiAhion here, however, and we now make the offer to untie all the dificilt knots a4 satisfactorily as possible. We select the following questions and answers, from another paper, as a sample tc show how the thing can be done: A disconsolate maiden writes: "A bout three years ago I became acquaint ed with a young gentleman; and al tiough lie never paid me any particu lar attentions, he would often accomipa ny me to andl from eliuirch, etc. Butl ately I have noti':ed a great chiange. ir him, iIe avoids mae as much as possi ble, and starts if I address him.
