TH3E A A"L FALL hsE1ED-1ING TO GR.ASS. We have freque_n;y referrefl ii:cl dentlly to the practice sdn grass !.ands in Uhe :d!. Lu: I: ), er, we believe, !Uven or r : s fr our prefene for fal 'v! r pring s owing. To start with W, we ar in this followingi nature. wh. s .ws a1l her sceds in the fall. But w: y lv me-ans consider this a o::;l iVQ arLument in favor of t1is se.:o. for it is welli known that . a t',iA . if inde d a hundredth p:irt of the seed l-which f 1,- tie cIL> fri:a the paren t I plant at in: turity ever produul a plant. o ,'.t tlh. m .-t e it reaso I. .1nld the One whi :i first b o t..ht us into the position, i!, that in thle iwU or three months intervening between the heats of summer and the time wheni the land is so locked up by cold as to put a stop to the growth of all ve.etation, we frequently have a coiUniation of circumstances the miost favoral!e fur 1 the growth of young grass. Tie rains and long cool nights of September and October give the young plants a fine start, and the roots pe:,etrate deep i enough to withstand the wintter's frost j and be ready at every first dawniing of spring to push forward an early 4 growth and cover the .and with a thick coat of folia-e before the sun becomes sufficiently row:rful to scorch and dry the surface. Another great advantage is that we gain one crop by sowing at this time. It is well known that the chanees are two to one against securing a good stand of grass sown in o:ts in the sprivg. If we want to make sure of the grass the oats must be left. But1 by seeding in the fal a crop of oats may be taken off and the land flushed up and seed sown in September, and if the land is good a erop of h::y cut the next summer. The increased cer tainty of securing a good stand will far more than p::y for the trl.uble of plowing in the fa!!. M:: a object to sowing clover in i.-O . bu. cause the plants will i.,t g- sufneient root to resist the fre-t. an d will b. 1i able to he.ive. This ij.eion is w, 11 taken, unless so:ne prutectio:: e,: be niit.ded or the plant pushed forward in son,e way. Gencrally, however, if the laund is in, good condition there will be ample time for the clover to send its roots down below the reach of ordinary frost before the ;rowth is stopped by the winter. It will gener ally be found that clover seeded alone in August or Septetjber is larger and has longer roots at the begininug of winter than Clover seeded with ots in spring. A very good way. however. and one which meets all the objection to fall sowi. is to sow the graiss in the fall aind the elover in February or March following. Another good rea sen for seeding in the fall instead of spring is, that it is aseason of compar ative leisure, and the farmer can ma:ke the necessary preparation of the Ilacd work of timte and care. and not be hur ried over it as he is too freq1uently i thbe spring. We have purp).sely &mit ted saying~ anything atbout. sowig grass seed with f:ll grain. Ti s pr:ct ies has becione .s g.ener:dl!y eta~blished and meets with -iuch univers:l *i aprv :t!. thamt it is hardly necss r: to a:dvo cate it. There is so m utch ad notw lying b'are th at will hartdly pyv to seed i.i wheat, w hich, if sown in grass in the fall. would in a few years afford good patsturage. tha1t we wish to impress upon ouar tarmiers the propriety and pt.siu>hty ol inain.:I tihem yield an ,i ncome at least sulliint to pay taxes Thlat this c:an be done in the way we have indicated. ini the time of com parative leisure, wic h is now at hand. we have not the siigh test d.>ubt. If he is a public benefactor wh miakes two blades of grass grow where onlyl one grew before, lie who caueses them to gzrow where utnei grewv before is doubly so. - ADVICE To Xo(a FARM.uls.
