We congratulate h im in the possession of such a snug place .of business. PiAxo TUNING.-We take pleasure in sta ting that Mr. B. H. Sa2'd ozTaIT.-W.~egret to learn that Mr. Thos. F. Tarrant, residing on the line of beierry and Edgefield Counties, a few days ago lost by congestion his last of three cliii &eers which have died in the short space of a year,. two.having died withiu eighi days of eaeh other. Singular to saythe seconddeath occ-arred just one year from the first, at the same hour, and at night. We sympathize with the parlats in this their sad bereave meat. PERsisTENT ADVERTIING.-Advertising as the means of prosperity, says the Pitts burg Commsercial,- is not as well understood as it should be. Nothing can tako its place. It is a fact that no one who has advertised liberally andsystematically has felt lIke dis -uting that it was the best spent money lie -lput into his business. As a horse was-never fade fat by a ingle bushel of oats, so'a sin *lederisernent Is never'a perfect test of s116 ben*fits of advertising. The man with genuine wares to sell who advertised them in the right way withbat snde.ss would be a ~curiosity.. ISsTAL.LATXo.-yhe following are the etBecers elected to serve Newberry Division Sons of Temperance, for the ensuing term: James Packer, Worthy P. it. Y. Leavell, Worthy A. Geo. P. Meredith, R. S. N. Bass, 0. S. GooD PsCKING.-Mr. Frank Mioon of this county, gave us the following account of one day's cotton p'icking, between Joe and 1Her bart, sons of Dick Moon, colored. Joe had the promise of a mule did he beat Herbert, bat the result proved thatl"it-the mule was not for Joe," as the other and the young est, only 13 years old, picked 353 pounds. the oldest, 15, only showing 318. Th is is good picking. 'There was a loss too in the day of two apd a half hours time. If our friend Prank promised the mule, we fece, certain that he lectured Joe up and down ths rows, on the uncertainty of human efforts, thereby causing defeat. TEMPERANtCE A DDRESs.-On Friday night last,a large and respectable audience filled the spacious Town Hall, now known as Temperance Hall, and had the pleasure of listening to an eloquent and able address on the above named subject, by the Rev. W,. D. Kirkland, of Colutmbia, who had been invi ted here for that purpose by-the Order of Good Temnplars. The address was a capital one, abounding in strong appeals, rouche; of pathos, as well as happy humorous illustra tions;, and was well received. Mr. .Kirkland is a young minister of great promise. and the Good Temnplars made a very happy selection ins their choice for an orator. At the conclu. sion of the address, the acting Worthy Chief, --the Rev. J. L. Shuford, took the stand, and brought the house down by some happy hits. We advise the Order to call on the latter ,gn tleman often, as he lives within conven 4nt reach. The results of the address and ),ortation wa's the signatures of several ns who determined to throw themselves ....iste banner of Temperance. The panc is over, and forbear:nce is ceasing to be a virtue. Parties indebted will look out for the red-hcaded, freckled facc man who is on the war-pat.. Delinquents will wish themselves in the mountains of Hepsidam, where the lion roareth, rather than in the presence of the d<>uble-jointed collector, employed by 41-tf. McFALL & POOL. NOT THE MEx.-We bad no idea when writing our notice of the defective Domestic Sewiu.g Machine man, published in last issue, that there were so many Domestic men in the Coutv. We first hear from Mr. M. M. Buford, who complains of people twitting him with cbeating his washerwoman, and defrauding the widow of her rent. Secondly, we bear from Mr. W. M. Watson, at Chap pell's Depot, who says that the old sanmas look daggers at him, while the ladies all en quire who washes for him at present. We regret all this deeply. Both of the gentie men named are domestic men of good and amiable qualities, and would scorn to wear an unpaid for garment, and having stables of their own bave had no occasion to hire. To defraud the widow they look upon as a crime of deepest die. Gentlemen and ladies of New berry County, and all washerwomen, know ye, that Messrs. M. M. Buford and W. M. Watson are NOT THE MEN. The person al laded to hailed fron Augusta, and was not half as good looking as either of those named above. RHEUMATISM CURED.-That rheumatism can be cured, is reduced to certainty. A German invention-a sort of needle instru ment-has been tested by numerous citizens throughout the State, and it has been clearly proventhat it almost immediately relieves the pain and stiffness. During the past summer, we were for ten days in company with a gentleman from Newberry, who had, only a few days before, been relieved by this instrument, and softthoroughly relieved that he perambulated :he streets of New York during a wet spell of several days' duration, without inconvenience. T wp well-known rheumatic gentlemen of this city have been relieved of this painful complaiu-t. Messrs. Webb & Bruce, of Newberry, are the owners of the patent right for the Southern States. We clip the above merited tribute to the efficacy of the Bannscheidt Instrument from the Columbia Plon ix, and take pleasure in adding our testimony to it. te gentleman alluded to, is none other than Capt. Webb, one of the prolrietors, and isis needless to say here, that he suffered from an attack of the severest character, and is now completely restored. Since then numerous had cases have been relieved in this community. We mention this for the )enetit of suffering humanity, that those who know not of the means at hand, may avail themselves of it. COLUMBIA KU KLUx.-The editor of thb Union-Herald, in the most wanton and cold blooded manner, deprived Mr. Homer P. Tarrant, formerly of Newberry, of his life-on Thursday last, and the Phonix man with like bloody-mindedness thitiking the gentle man not quite dead enough. gave him the final stab. We charge'thein .boih as being Ku Klux of the worst stripe. Of the two, however, the former is most guilty. -He may plead that the act was unpremeditated, and done under the influence of Seeger's best Lager, which flowed so freely and abundantly about that time, and on the opening of that gentleman's new house, and that com ing into his sanctum immediately after, his ey.cs, in fine phrensy rolling, lighted on the Newberry HER ALD, and seeing a paragraph announcing the departure of Mr. Tarrant, the idea seized hold of his imagination to kill thc Innocent gentleman. It was a cruel thing, not only to the gentleman himself but to his wife and family, luckily, however, th ey understood it at once-that the Union-Herald evidently saw through dark glasses, and took the Newberry HERALD'S lament in the local as an obituary and further had been just apprised of the fact that Ms. T. was alive and kicking in the city of Augusta. Now had the Union-Herald an. nounced the probable death of L. R. Marshall, who stated in the same issue of our paper that he yas stAnyxNo, it would not h.ave been so bad, but Mr. Tarrant was in good health, in a flue situation, and living on the fat of the land, with no prospect of starva tion staring hi.m in- the face. To kill him under such circumstances is an offence against himself and this community. In the very next issue of the same paper appears an announcement of the deaths in Newberry, of three persons who never lived here. What does it mean? D)oes the Union. Herald desire the death of the entire County? ABOUT THE TOWN AND COUNTY. Weather delightful. Some one nas-seen rrost. Fevers abating Even the panic is subsiding, And business Is looking up, As an evidence look at the new advertise meats in the HERALD. Another in the many improvements going on in town. Mr. Jordan P. Pool Is increasing the ca pacity of his livery and sale stables. Mr. J. N. Martin has improvel the appear. ance of his residetnce very much. There will soon be a first class restaurant opened in this town, and by that popular gentleman, Mr. Win. Milam. More anon. Mr. Thos. F. Harmon's looking glass gal. lery acts.- like a .ehrarm. The handsomest people in town pronounce the views charm ing. Harmon knows how to draw folks, no need of HUNT-lug customers. It is clearly proven that the "absolutoid and absteactoid Elemnentisimus of Being echie5 or reappears by anlogy within the relatoid and concretoid elaborismus." The freights over the Greenville and Col umbia Railroad continue to be very heavy, but notwithstandin~g they come through sat isfactorily. When are men like eye-glasses? When they ma.ke spectacles of themselves. We ad vise all such to wear Speck's improYed spec. tacles. The meanest man in town is the man who doesn't subscribe for a paper. Don't forget that amoog other. improve ments theT HERALD is to be enlarged, an'd the editor expeets every man to do his duty. Come'up and examine some pretty speci mens of Job. Printing done at this office. Wedding Cards and Invitations can be print ed here as well and as cheaply as elsewhere, and a little quicker. A man who will send a Job of Printing to Columbia. Charleston or New York, whet starving Printers at home need work, is not carrying out the right principle of live and let live. The idea of patronizing home in dustry never enters his head except in hit own case. He expects people to buy at hit store. Of course that is right. We aic pleased to state that it is in con tenplation to place a belfry over St. Luke'i Curchr, for the accommodation of the beli. in this connection we learn with regret thal it is probable the Rev. E. R. Miles, will hav to give up his charge of the Church, the coin lg year, in eonsequence of bad health. On Wednesday aftarnoon, a small fire wat discovered in the garrison grarters, which fortunately, was soon extinguished. Lt iv Judge Mos-e- a1 familye noinge them selves at Spartaubarg, where they wi!lremnain until the Fall Term of Court. We regret to 4-arn th:it Dr. .. P. Johnson, living at Maybin ton, lvzt an infant child last week. Mr. D. W. T. Kibler, a well to do farmer of this County, says there is no need of for eign labor. Farmers are Vdvized to adopt his plan and raise domestic labor. Last week he was presented with a pair of boun cing boys. Mother and children are doing well. (ADyRTISE;XENT.) The Weed Sewing Machine at Vienna. (Extract froir the Hartford Daily Courant.) In Yesterday's issue we announced the return home of Mr. George A. Fairfield, Su perinteudant of the Weed Sewing Machine Company, who has represented that compa ny at the Vienna Fxposi!ion. A personal interview with him satisfies us of the justice of the company's claim to the HIGHEST HONORS AT VIENNA. Mr. F. brings with him the official cataogue of awards at the great Exposition, in wWich his name appears as having received a medal for co-operator, in producing and perfecting machines. This medal is given "to persons who as managers of manufactories are nomi nated on the part of the (xbibitors on ac count of the leading part they have taken in the features gf excellence of the produc tions.' No other sewing machine company, or re presentative thereof, received such an award, and this settles the point, beyond dispute, that tLe Weed Company lead the world, in superiority of machines and mechanical ability. In addition to this grand award, the Weed Company received a "Medal for Progress," 4he highest award made to any sewing ma chines. Also, a "Medal of Merit," the third in the list of honor. Thus it will be seen that the Weed Sewing Machine'Company, of this city have received the three highest awards at the Vienna Expo sition of 1873-one of these being superior to any and all others issued to any exhibitor in their line of goods. The Weed Company also received the high est prize given to American Family Sewing Machines at the Paris Exposition of 1867. !Htartford may well feel proud of this organ ization, and also of it? Superintendent, who has achieved such credit for the company, and done honor to our city. in the eyes of re presentatives from every part of the world. 41-it. elarried, On the 9th inst., at the residence of Mr. G. We look for it still. The usual felicitations are tendered to the above mentioned happy couple. Commercial. WEEKIY REviEw.-Notwithstanding the comparative tightness of money, trade of all kinds opened lively at the beginning of the week, but toward the close fell off, and now we note a stringency quite unexpected and depressing. We feel confident, however, that business will soon improve. In cotton the transactions have. all things considered, been moderately lively, a good demand prevailing. If the farmers will move their crop speedily to market, we feel confi dent that trade will at once revive, and the results of the late. panic will soon be over come. We are pleased to notice that the Imerchants are not only willitig, but are making liberal offers to the planters to aid them in this their time of difiiculty. The great ob.ject of every one who desires a long and healthy life should be to put his body in a condition to resist the life threatening in, finences by which we are all more or less surrounded; and no invigorant and correct, ive at present known so effectively ans wers this purpose as the vitalizing elixir which, under the anpretending name of Hlostetter's Stomach Bitters, has been for more than twenty years the standard tonic.of America.
