FRIENDSHIP. A tiny, slender, silken thread, Is friendship, and we make it Bind hearts and lives to hearts and lives, Bat e'en a breath may shake it, And often it takes but one wee word But one wee word-to break it It draws the lips in smiling shape, It draws the look of pleasure From eye to eye when hands touch hands, When two hearts beat one meassura; And draws a meaning from a word Which makes the world a treasure. Like string of a tunetl harp or lute Between glad souls 'is holden, And love's fond fingers on the thread Make music rare and golden Make music such as tender hearts Could live, and ne'er grow old in. But if a breath may shake it, let That breath come near it never, And never spoken be that word Which friendship's tie might sever, BGt let the cord groir stronger till The dawning of Forever. Speech Making in Prayer. There is a great deal of praying in public that closely resembles speech making. When the preach er says "let us pray," the people bow their heads as if in supplica tion, but it is too often the case that the prayer offered in public is only an oration.-We recently heard of a minister who commenc ed his prayer with a eulogy upon human nature, setting forth its dignity and independence. Then a description of the horrible and enslaving effects of superstition, and of false views of the character of God, which have always been entertained by some in the chris tian church. He then tells God who he is-enumerating His at tributes, remindinm Him of His capabilities and great powers. After this, the results of modern and theological criticism were summed up, and the prayer con cluded with a sketch in outline of the state of things in the "good time coming, when man will be emancipated from the bondage of traditions and rites, and supersti tious usages, and will reverence and worship only the Divine Be ing in His -own nature." Pray ers offered in public should never be an oration, nor should they in clude everybody and everything in detail, the world over, in the space of three to five minutes. which is ordinarily considered sufficient time to dccupy in one prayer. T'here is but one way to mnaka pulpit prayers interestingand prof i table, and that is to make them local, personal and sympathetic, and they, will take hold of our hearts. But to do this, the minis ter must first take into his own heart- the every day life of his peo ple. If he knows them well, and feels for them as one should feel for his own soul, he can and will take them to God, in his arms, in the warm embrace of his fervid soul.-When a minister brings the business cares, perils and successes, the home-life, the little every day trials of his people, the personal j,oys and sorrows of the aged, of the children, of the youth, of thiose wvho are weak, bef.ore God, anid interprets ard presses them for divine sympathy and help, in the light of a deep religious in. sight and powerful love and faith,! no one will be indifferent or an profited. They will find his plead ing taking hold of their own souls , and they, will plead ; the prayer, will be their prayer. and the bless ing will come to them ;ike "cold water on a thristy soul." And prayer will no longer be an in different part cf the public wor-! ship to them; they will look forward1 to it with the same interest that they do to the sermon and recall its influenee upon their hearts af ter many days.-N. . Chri.stian Advocate. JAPANEsE WOMEN.-The Japa nese women are not pretty ; but they have charming natural manners, with beautifully shaped arms and tiny|I hands. The young women are all as| remarkable for their superb white teeth as the married ones are for their hideous black ones. This custom1 originated some two or threc hundred years ago, and is supposed to show the wife's devotion to her hushand. One -of the Mikado's wives (so goes the legend) was very lovely, and to show her indifference to her personal atppearance, and to prove her love for her husband, blackened her beautiful teeth and shaved off her eyebrows., This was considered such a sacrifice, tha~t all living wives (not to be out done by Mrs. Mikado) followed her example. The custom has become compulsory. The vast majority of the carpet bagi party in South Carolina, and the con-i sequent sense of impunity felt by its leaders, have brought about a spirit of insolent lawlessness which may be strong enough to wreck the organiza tion. The candidate for State Treas urei- on Saturday spoke with great candor of the thefts of his friends and rivals, and certainly made damaging statements. The Bolters' Convention, tinder Gor. Orr, was rather better composed than the regular one ; but as they have not sufficient pluck to1 defy and repudiate the great central so,urce of corruption, they will accom plish nothing of importance. If any thing is done for the suffering State. it must be through the Liberal and Democratic coalition. -N. Y. Tribune Life is like a theatre. During the play, we take higher and lower seats ; but when it is over, we mingle in the common stream and go home. Man's chief wisdom consists in be in sensible of his follia. A well poste.l Liberal Republican, .vriting from Connecticut, 5ays that 5,000 voters who have heretofore act ad with the Republican party have al ready enrolled themselves in the Libe ral ranks. The writer continues : "If the Grant defection should stop even where it is, the State would be lost to Grant by 10,000 majority." A good sign for a harmonious settle ment-The dining and wining which for some days past have prevailed at Geneva. We are reminded by these diplomatic dinners of the feasting and toasting all round which at Washington carried the High Joint Commission so splendidly through their arduous labors. "The pleasantest period in love-making, says Anthony Trollope, is that in which lovers can converse about the little ordinary matters of life." And a proof is given in the girl who realized the greatest amount of bliss when she told Ler lover how many stockings she l.ad. Bless that girl, what a wife she'd make. Two colored people in Forsyth, Ga., were married the other day on a "license" which had no reference whatever to the subject of matrimony. As neither they nor the parson were the wiser, no great harm was done. We regret to learn from the Abbeville Medium, that the H1on. D. L. Wardlaw was struck with paralysiN of the right arm and leg on Monday last. The disease is only partial, and strong hopes are entertained of the Judge's speedy recovery.-Carolinian. A daughter of a Mr. Blackmar, aged about twelve years, residing about a mile from Aiken, while employed in picking grapes on Saturday last was bitten by a rattlesnake, and now lies in a very pre carious condition. The earth is a tender and kind mo ther to the husbandman ; and yet at one season he always harrows her bo som, and at another plucks her ears.
