The "Ladles'.Society in Aid of the Suffer Ing and Destitute Poor of the South" would rctunlly and earnetly call the attention the generous Northern public to the great and fearful suffering now prevailing in the Southern States. Letters are daily re ceived from the South, from the Generals ceommanding, Governors. Ministers, and em lient Citisens, furnishing the most heart. iending details of the actual want, famine and starvation in their immediate neighbor" hood. The following few extracts from the very many letters received by the Secretary and Managers of the Society are respectfully referred to: HRa Qas., FIRsT MIL DivisIoN, Richmond., Va., May 11, 1867. Mns. HARLowR MArsEs: My Dear Madam-I shall be too glad if anything.I can say will aid the Society in its noble work. A large proportion of the peo ple of the South have suffered, and many aoa stil suffering almost to the limit of en durance from the devastation of war and subsequest failure of. crops. They are mak -g every possible exertion to revive their various branches of industry and become blfupportng. The liberal assistance which the Northern people are wel able to give, wlii ileve a great amount of distress, and gR no-doubt be sufficient to place the poor of the South beyond further suffering for ood. The recent manifestations of an al =oat universal desire throughout tb~e South, ir a jeally fraternal reunion with the North, -may well serve to stimulate the generous um eohof the Northern people, while could do more to foster and en . courage the growth of a healthy sentiment in the South than the generous aid which it is the mission of your Society to invoke. isineetely hope the noble effort of the aresult In the.most abundaut suo at, dear Mdatn, very respectfully, ifitbeleat servant, L M.
