A TR*Drrro.-It has been a question for discussion among philosophers, how it hap pens, that women, naturally amiable, when aroused, can say such sharp and nenetrating 'things. The mystery was solved not long since, by the discovery of some very old ar -chieves, that gives the following expl-mantion of' the matter. It is said that when Lot sep arated from Abraham, that he determined to invest his surplus funds in real esta te, and as the city ofSodom presenteel an inviting field, he turned his face thither, and there located. But so great was the wickedness oIf the peo ple, that it was determined by the Creautor of the UniverseA-o destroy the piace; accordingly messengers were sent to lead Lot anid his family out; they departed r'eluctantly; and Mrs. Lot giving her bonnet box to a servant to bring along, was watching and stoppkug for her and scolding withal, when she was suid denly turned mnto a pillar of salt. Thus by a strange and wonderful sympathy', a wo man's tongue, even to this day is quite salty', whenever she feels disposed to convert it into a saline weapon, especially, if her bon:net is missin.g or a subject of critique.-(Sovthiern Recor) ._ __ _ _ THE FREEDMEN'S BUREAt.-Tlie Bill before Congress relating to the Freedmn;z's Bureau pr'o vides that the Act establishing the Bureau shall continue in force until otherwise pro'.idedl by law, and shall extend to refn::ees and f'reedmien in 1. parts of the United Stamtes. This welcome intelligence was generally known thtougnout the city, and by 4 o'clock, several hundred persons had congre-ited at the depot of the South Carvolina Railroad, to witness the arri val of the first thirough passenger train :i:ce the 15th of February last. This train was in charge of Cordtctor V. B. Kennedy, (who, by the wv, had charge of the last through train which . left t is city,) anrd was draiwn by the fine locomiotive Coosawhatchie, Engineer Shiokes. A number of p -rons were on their way to the depot, but dlid not hurry th'-mselves, expecting to hear the we1 come sound of the steam w hiistle ; but in this they were disappointed, as the locomotive moved qutietly up to the depot. It was the intention of Mr. Peake to have brought this train through, but he was detained in Charleston by impottant basinecss. The last waiy train that run through to Colum bia was on the IGth of February, IS65. Eleven months have brought again the cheerful sound of the engine whistle. This was run under the 5rpervisioni of Mr. Gilbert, and utnder his super vision the firs? trains were irun through last even Mr. Mecwn has kept his promise, and we congratulate him upon the result.
