Johnstone, secretary of the >tate Board of Charities and Corrections, visited the state peniteniary last week for the purpose of retting information as to the treat nent of prisoners, etc. He talked j vith several prisoners and was satsfied with the conditions and man-! gement of Col. D. J. Griffith, superintendent, and Capt. W. H. 5ondley. Of the 205 state prisoners 105 ire in the penitentiary, with a! ^uard force of 18 men for day and light service. In addition, there are e/eral ''trusties" who do work in he buildings and yards and are flowed more freedom than the >thers. Mr. Griffith called attention o the scarcity of men for work at he state farm, saying that all mailable prisoners had been placed here; this condition, said he, would lot justify him in placing more men o clean up the state house grounds. The prisoners are not allowed to ead anything but religious papers tnd books, the hours of rising varyng between 4:30 and 6:30 o'clock iccording to the work each does. ror breakfast they are given hominy, neat and bread; a vegetable dinner, vhile bread and molasses are served n their cells for supper. After i i J i_ i i :^.u vorKing in ine launury, uiacusimtii ihop or out in the gardens and 'arms by the penitentiary, the jrisoners are replaced in their cells it 5:30 o'clock, but during the hot lummer days are permitted to renain outside until it becomes dark. Cach prisoner is made to bathe once l week and may bathe as often as le or she desires. Upon getting jermission a prisoner may write or eceive a letter any day. Prisoners n the death house are not given iny exercise, but are confined in heir cells at all hours. A tour of the Griffith hospital, jrected in the administration of D. Hey ward, disclosed the fact that here are four negro patients being five^ t ie open air treatment for uberculosis; these prisoners do no vork, and both Gov. Manning and Jr. Johnstone said that their conlitions were "better than at the isylum." They are kept entirely eparate from the other prisoners. Gov. Manning said that he inended going to Lexington in the lear future to visit the state reormatory for negro boys who now lumber 129. He said also that as oon as his ideas of discipline at the lenitentiary were definitely formed ie would make the prisoners a talk. In speaking of finances Mr. Griffith aid that he had insufficient money o run the place until the middle of uly and that he would be forced to ell some of the 828 bales of cotton iow at the penitentiary. The cotton ; 3 said to be strict low middling in ;rade and at the present time would iring about nine cents a pound. Girls Have Narrow Escape. Atlanta. June 24.?Several hund-1J red girls narrowly escaped fire and j * explosion fumes yesterday afternoon i. on the second floor of a straw hat | works in this city. The girls had quit work and had !, just lelt the building when a terrific 1 explosion was heard and the whole upper part of the building from which they had emerged burst into flame. According to the fire chief, the j blaze must have started from anj explosion in the boiler room. By a j fortunate accident, everybody was I out of the upper part of the build-! ing at the time, and no lives were 11 lost.
