George Baxter, Captured Lexington, S. 0., Oct. IS.?George Baxter, a desperate negro who escaped from thA Lexington county chaingang four years ago last February, waB captured in Wilmington, N. 0., by Sheriff Sim J. Miller on Saturday, after a search of more thanfonryaars. Baxter had served bnt one month of a three-year sentence for larceny of live stock, he having been convicted | of having stolen two cow9 from the pasture of a Lexington county farmer. Pp| Baxter, along with three other negroes ' made a dash for liberty while the |? chaingang was located in the Dutch ?: - Fork, aud made a successful get-a-way. Two of the other three have been capV tured, and with the capture of Baxter, leaves only one of the four at large. Sheriff Miller caught Baxter in less ||p than thirty minutes after landing in the North Carolina city, the oceffir having previously located his man. Baxter is one of the most desperate men with which the county has had to - it.* deal 10 many years, rreviuus lu uio i trial he made a fierce attack on Sheriff Miller in an effort to escape jail, but the Sheriff's wonderful presence of ? - ' - mind and absolute strength subdued the prisoner. "I am sho" glad to get back, boss," said Baxter yesterday afternoon as he alighted from the sheriff's automobile, **I have not seen a bit of pleasure nor peace of mind since I left, and I'm going to be good from this on. I was ~ looking for Sheriff Miller every minute. for I knew that* he was on my trail and would eatob me sooner or later. I just decided that I would not try to hide further, and when I saw the Sheriff in Wilmington on Saturday ; I was the happiest mail ill town."
