ARREST MANY ATTENDANTS 1 Now Outside New York Jurisdiction ?Think Ho Made Fop "State ot t;on necticut.?Reward of $500 Has Beei Offered For His Capture. Matteawan, N. Y.?Harry Kendal Thaw, the slayer of Stanford White escaped from the Hospital for th< Criminal Insane here. A dart for lib erty through an open gate, a leap int< the open door of a powerful autq mobile that stood quivering outsid< and a flight like a rocket for the Con necticut State line, 30 miles away, ac ? complished his escape, j At last report he was still at large | and the hospital authorities felt cer | tain he was outside the state. Onc< ! -jt<3 hmindarifts Thaw is free 1/V^^ VA1U AVW ? v Only months, perhaps years, of liti gation, can bring him ba^k to Mat teawan and then only in one eventthat he be adjudged insane in th< state to -which he has fled. Five confederates manned the cai in which Thaw, escaped and a big black limousine which trailed it pas the asylum gate. The police have th? descriptions of Thaw's confederate! and the names under which they reg istered at a local hotel and are seek lng them. The hospital authorities believec that Thaw fled to the shore of Long Island Sound and boarded a yachi waiting with steam up to rush him tc Europe. A reward of $500 for Thaw's appre hension has been offered by Dr. R. F C. Keib, superintendent of the asylum Howard H. Barnum, the attendant &l the gate past whom Thaw flashed ir bis break for freedom, is under arresl and other arrests are expected to fol low in the rigid investigation begun by Doctor Keib. Long years' residence at the asylum and reported declarations by Thaw that he would never attempt to ob tain his freedom except by legal means had established Thaw's status as s "trusty." There was little out of th ordinary in his appearance, even at so early an hour in the courtyard, and if Barnum saw him?as to this no one save the hospital authorities could say and they refuse to talk?he rais ed no Question. Unable to Shake His Testimony. Washington.?The house lobby investigators centered their attention on the statement of J. H. McMichael, one time chief page of the house, that Representative James T. McDermott, of Chicago, had received about $7,500 for efforts to defeat a bill affecting local pawnbrokers and "loan sharks.' After more than five hours pf hard work the committee was not much nearer a definite conclusion about the $7,500 than it was when McMichael ? /v/3^ ofo+Am Ant I IHClUC U.IO J. .11 Ol. SMVVUl&Ub. IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HUffiO m Business Man Tells Why It Is Nece sary to Have Men of Friendly Spirit. "If my bookkeeper Is a man of sot f disposition," said a business man, 4 don't mind it so much. I don mean joky, foolish men, but men < natural good humor and the friend) ' spirit and courtesy that common) goes with it, "I legard it as of high important t to have such men at the counter where they deal with people comin in, regulars and strangers. People t stinctively judge of an establishmei by the first person they meet in il if he is a man of courtesy they fe > like coming again; if he is cool ar a indifferent to them they feel like sta; h ing away. The reason so many people wfc ( have the opportunity to grow veget bles and other crops for their own us as well as for sale, do not do so is du 1 no doubt, to the fact that they fail 1 understand the real profits that can t 1 derived from a small plot of grouni As a matter of fact more vegetable can be grown in the city or suburbs 1 back yard than the average family ca i eat, with a good quantity to spare. Two Neighbors. Two neighbors kept hens and qua ' reled because they scratched each otl er's potato rows up. One sold hi hens unknown to the other, who mad a large run and fastened his hens u] saying: "Now the first hen I see in my ga den I shall shoot." Next day he saw a hen scratchln as usual, so he got the gun and she * it, then threw it over his neighbor' rails, saying: "Take your hen!" Tb ? hen was picked up, taken in, an ; cooked. The following days the same thin happened. Still the neighbor too l them up and said nothing, till the se1 ? enth came over and hit him on tb [ head. Then he picked It up, an threw it back at his neighbor, saying "Eat your own hens. We are tire of eating them, and prefer a littl ; pheasant. I sold my hens over month since!" "Grace Before Meat." On the strength of the fact thz they eat bread in the school pla; t ground without first saying grace, tb L children of Dunfermline have bee I charged with irreverence by Re ; Jacob Primmer. Doubtless Mr. Primmer would gla< ly revert to the custom that prevaile during the time of Cromwell, whei ( according to Bishop Burnet, peopl "said grace both before and aftc meat, sometimes for the length of | whole hour."
