Notwithstanding ail the com. plaints about the carelessness of the ordinary waiter and all the jokes about the magnificence of the head waiter, every one knows that the business of the "poor knight of the napkin" is not an easy one. At any rate, in a story told by Seymour Hicks of a New York restaurant one must be glad that the waiter finally got his "innings:" Once, sitting in my usual corner at this restaurant, i heard a much harassed waiter score heavily off a tiresome customer who was ordering oysters. The conversation that took place was the following?the wretched waiter turning to go and execute the I order and being brought back each time: "Say, waiter, I want a dozen blue points." "Yes, sir." "Oh, waiter"? "Yes, sir." "Steamed, you know." "Yes, sir." "Oh, waiter, you'll see that they're not done too much." "No, sir." "Oh, and waiter"? "Yes, sir. "Will you see that they put a squeeze of lemon in each shell ?" "Yes, sir." "Oh, and waiter, just the smallest amount of butter over them when you serve them." "Yes, sir." - "And, waiter"? "Yes, sir." "Don't forget the pepper and salt." This last remark was too much for the poor knight of the napkin. Turning back again of his own free will, he said: "And, sir""Well?" answered the customer. "Would you like them with or without?' "With or without what?" "Pearls, sir," said the waiter and disappeared.?Youth's Companion. U nconventional ities. "I just knew you were coming to visit us, Cousin Abigail. I saw the new moon over my left shoulder the other evening." "Don't apologize for bringing the dog with you when you come to call Mrs. Jipes. I've noticed that you don't stay quite so long when you Dring him." "I don't remember that I ever lent you any money, my dear fellow. If I did, I charged it up to profit and loss." "Landlord, I haven't given a tip to any of the waiters, but I'll give you a tip if you'll tell me how you manage to get people to come and stay at your old shebang." "You mustn't mind my telling you. Borus, that your latest book is the rottenest thing you ever wrote?and that's saying a good deal." "Lettie, dear, you're a good girl, but if ever you get a husband you'll have to catch him with a lasso."?Chicago Tribune. The Silver Lining. Richard Barry, the well known antisuffrage writer, said at a recent antisuffrage dinner in Albany: "The masculine tyranny that women j complain of is often a blessing in disour friends and customers tha' CLOTHft . George W.'s fondness for staying up late in the face of having to get up early alarmed one of the regulars at the old Sherman House. He made bold to introduce himself to Mr. W., prefaced his remarks by saying that he knew it was none of his business, but was curious to know how anybody could stay up until 2 or 3 and get up at 8. It is a reproach, perhaps, to the charity of mankind, but none the less true, that the man who is DOWN finds the number of real friends painfully diminished. Against this human weakness, and offsetting it to a considerable extent, is the tendency of sucessful people to lend moral and material assistance to those who show themselves worthy of .it A manifest determinaton to push to the front develops a surprising number of people who will help in the pushing. The bank connection is the touch of material nature which makes the commercial world kin. The customers of thi9 bank find in each other and in the officers of the institution moral and financial help which is pushing them to the front whether they will or no. A small deposit will bring you into this little world where men and women laugh with each other in their successes. y BANK OF CHAPIN CHAPIN, S. C. J. S. WESSTNGER, President. J. F.
