ST, of Your Valued Pati 90o Pounds of Lint Cotton | From One Acre. To the Editor of The Dispatch: For the benefit of the readers of The Dispatch, I give below how I worked an acre of cotton last year, 1910: .1 haye heen experimenting for several years, but not with the results I had iast year. I ha ve learned that L do33 not pay to work a large farm the I old way, with little help. Any farm- , | er can make a good living on a few I acres if he will only take a little pains, I and use good judgment, j Farmers, count your profit at one half or one fourth bale per acre, and see where you will be. I picked 2250 pounds seed cotton from this acre. When ginned it made 900 pounds lint. I sold at 14>? cents which brought $130.50. Sold 45 bushels of cotton seed at 45 cents a bushel, which brought ?20.25; total, ?150.75. Fertilizers cost $26.00, cultivating $7. 75; hoeing $2.00; picking $13.50; hauling $5.09; total cost $54 25; clear profit $f5.00. How I cultivated: Feb. 10, laid off rows 43^ feet apart with shovel plow and bedded^oiith turn plow, eight furrows eight inches deep. April 14, drilled nine one horse loads of 9table manure in furrow; 400 lbs. acid, 10-2 analysis, 200 lbs. cotton seed meal, mixed .id drilled in furrow; with manure. Then I went twice with bntt to^cue plow as deep a9 horse could pull, an 1 mixed well with soil, manure, and fertilzer. Sided on with double foot plow stock and bedded with two furrows and planted same day. I then cultivated cotton with ? * l.""! nmnnrv OTTftTII? Olnllh pai/;iib iicri awcoj^ cvwj v..?j two and three furrows to the row. At first plowing rather deep, but gradually cultivated more shallow as cottcn grew, until last time scarcely breaking the cru9t, Last two plowings, plowed every other middle three furrows every four days, as it does not stuut cotton, and make it throw off fruit. June 0, I broadcast 100 pounds nitrate of Soda before plowing. June 28, I drilled 200 pounds standard guano and 100 pounds potash mixed, in scooter furrow, near cotton in every other middle, or once to row; | then plowed three furrows with sweep > to cover and mix'with soil; Tfiltr 7 T Tint: another amplication Of i V J - X'~ l . 200 pounds standard guano in other middle, near cotton same as bef ..reCultivate until cotto'n begins to lap in middle; last time with furrow in center or middle with large sweep.
