COL. J. C. HOPE DEAL. On Saturday, July 17, Lexington ounty suffered the loss of one of her lost prominent and highly respected itizens, Col. J. C. Hope, of Hope Staion. After an illness of less than a *eek he succumbed to the terrible efrct* of internal blood poisoning. In his death his native county and grounding counties lest one of their tost useful and distinguished citizens, ol. Hope was a man of the highest ppe of character and was the fortunate possessor of as many friends and cquaintancea perhaps as any man in exington county. He as baptized in old historic St. John's utheran church on the first Sunday i November, 1SI5, by the Rev. Geo. [altiw&nger. Jr. He afterwards beame a confirmed member of the same hurch and was always an active and lithful church member. Numerically this division of the iope family wag small one, Col. J. . being the only male member of the imily to survive and rear a family, [e had only one sister, Mrs. Dr. L. C. [obbs, and one brother, young John ulius, both of whom preceded him to le grave. Col. Hope endured the hardships of le Confederate war. Had he been illed in that'great time "that tried ten's souls" the Hope name v.ould ave become extinct in thi9 part of ountry. He was a member of Comany G of White's battalion, Light rtillery, Capt. W. L. DePa99' battal>n. He surrendered in North Caroua under Gen. Joseph Johnson. At the time of hi9 death he was a lember of Jas. D. Nance camp, No. 36, Newberry. His immediate survivors are his rife, Mrs. Martha F. Hope, one aughter, Mrs. Mary L. Hipp, of Polaria, Jno. J. Hope, of Columbia and 5ur grandchildren. Col. Hope was the uncle of Col. Jno. '. Hobbs, of New York and Dr. James [. Hobbs, of Chicago.
