Fork Township To So. Elsewhere we publish an article from The State in reference to the proposed annexation of a portion of Fork Township to Richland county. The article speaks for itself. These pepple have petitioned the governor for an election on the question, and it is likely that the governor will "grant their request. We are at a loss to know why these good people want to leave toe gooa on wuuuj v? ton to join that of Richland. The _ State asserts that the maximum distance to Lexington court house from x Fork township is 17 miles. This certainly must be an error, because it cannot possibly be more than 10 or 12 miles. Of bourse the farthest point might reach about 16 miles. Under the constitution a county line must not oome nearer than eight miles to a courthouse. Should this scheme materialize there will still be a portion of the Fork .in Lexington county? that portion lying south of the River road. We have not yet figured on the * fovahlft nronertv amount vi ,?, ? j this would take away from Lexington nor can a correct estimate be made until after the survey has been made. It will require a two-third vote to carry the project through and we trust that, after doe consideration, the voters will decide to remain with Lexington. These are good citizens and we would regret to lose them, but in any event they are to decide ' I L E > IP ' pf : " K fey s fi' )> *' . ' W v > i w . , 5>-r if5>^:; . '"\ rFROM WHOM PI ?p|\ . ? , . [ When we are better informed as to J the exact territory proposed to be cut off, we shall have something more to say on the subject. It is to be regretted that there has arisen such a muddle over the Steele bridge matter. In another column we publish an interesting article from the Columbia State on the matter. We submit it to our readers for what it is worth. Personally, we know Due very little about the charges?whether they are true or not is not for us to say. We hope that they ars not. Itseems most likely now that the whole ! matter will be aired, and when this is done we will see what we will see. This bridge is a necessity and should be built. We understand that the sui pervisor intends building the bridge, but will make a thorough investigaj tion as to the cost of the bridge, before paying the contract price of the old board?118,500. Further developments in the matter will be awaited with interest. United States Senator E. D. Smith * Um.m annninfM) Mr. P. M_ GallOWSY, , TT li.1 MV WU*w*%rW. cordially welbomc.
