The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, September 2,1908. C. C_ Ffla.therston.fi at Sa luda. Saluda, Aug. 23.?The "temperance rally" held here Friday under the auspices of the\ local W. C. T. U. was a most pleasant occasion in every respect. The exercises were held in old Red Bank church, and the attendance, while not as large as expected, was good. The music, which consisted of temperance songs, accompanied as it was by organ, violin and cornet, was a most pleasing feature. The Rev. a. D. Bodie, of the Lutheran Church, read from the Proverbs, and after making a very practical talk in keeping with the occasion presented Hon. C. C. Featherstone, of Laurens. Many Saluda people remembered Mr. Featherstone, and hence he was not among strangeis. His address was one of the strongest ever heard here, and has elicited much favorable comment. He stated that for years those who were opposed to the use of intoxicants advocated temperance only, but now, after seeing the only way to treat the evil is to cut it out root and brach, they are working for prohibition. He defied any man to show where liquor ever elevated man or made him better. It was a question of Tight and wrong. The moral phase of the question could not be eliminated, for it was a matter that struck deep ill man's moral nature. He next showed that prohibition laws could be as well enforced as any other law. No sane man would contend that a prohibition law could be enforced perfectly no more than could any law passed and enforced by finite minds be. enforced perfectly. The l&tter part of his address was devoted to showing that those who favored the sale of intoxicants did not hesitate to work for men who represented their views, while too many church people were content with singing and praying about it and going no further. No man could refuse to do hiS/duty as a citizen in matters political no more than he could fail to do it in any other walk of life. The statement so often heard that Christian people had no business taking an active part in politics was a fabrication of the devil and kept alive by those whose political opinions on certain issues were in contrast to the opinions to those who desired to see mankind elevated and bettered, and who wished to see those things which drag down driven from the State. "Every Christian," said he, "should be a most active politician, for how can you expect to see politics, which it is claimed are so dirty, purified if the Christian people of "South Carolina do not enter actively into them and purify them?" TW anu ttrvin HparH +.V>p aHrlrpsfl make IXWAiJ IV XAV uvw* v? ? the statement that his argument on the whiskey question is simply unanswerable. Sow to Avoid Appendicitis. King cotton is now reigning supreme in this fair Southland. The fleecy staple is pouring into the markets from every farm and hamlet. The only bad feature of the present cotton situation is the fact that it is selling so cheap and the quantity that must go to the market at once will tend to make it go lower. If the farmers can all hold on to their crop and not sell at the present low prices they can make a high rate of interest on the cotton by holding. This is a good crop, but the people of theworld must be clothed and the cotton for clothing them 18 in the Houcn^ Jtioia on to your cotton a little white and you will reap the just and honest rewards of your labor.
