Wednesday, November 7,1906. 1 The people of Charleston and other Bections of this State are quite jubilant over the arrival of the North jry German Loyd steamer Whittekind, with the first load of immigrants for this State, which arrived at Charles'c*. ; ton last Sunday witn^svo passengers 8|; on board from Bremen, Germany. Ths second steamer from the same point will arrive, it is said, about the latter part of January, 1907. This is the work of State Immigration Commissioner Watson and may prove beneficial to the State, but we are frank to say we are not so much enthused oven this tide of immigration into the State. While we may get some good material in the end we fear results 4 will not prove beneficial. Charleston's Gala week opened last Monday with the city gailydecoratei and visitors have been pouring in from all sections of the State, bent on having a grand time, enjoying the festivities of the occasion and to see the grand sites, enjoy Charleston's warm hospality and to greet] friends in attehdace. . Death of a Child. . On Monday of last week membraneous croup laid cold hands of death - rmrm the little form of Henry A. Meetze, Jr., the four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Meetze, of Leesville, S. C., plucking from this happy family a bower of promise, the pride of home and the joys of its parent?, leaving pearcing pangs in the hearts of its loved ones; but the angles bore its soul to the land above where it will remain in all its glory to await the coming of those left behind. Why this bright little boy just at this time should be snatched from the arms of its parents seems mysterous to us, but when we remember the i . Lord said suffer little children to come gpll unto me and forbid them not. We must not murmur but rest the judgment of Him who doeth all things for the best. Its little form was buried at Leesville. Mr. and Mrs. Meetze have the heartfelt sympathy of our people in their said hour of bereavement. Court. . The court of general sessions met on Monday morning, the Hon. Robert V W. Memminger, of Charleston, judge presiding. All the grand jurors and all the petit jurors but two were on hand. To fill the panel Messrs. Sanders Wingard and George Fields were ^irawn out of the five mile box. On account of Monday being salesday and Tuesday the election, nothing has yet been done, except taking the pleas of some negro gamblers, who were sentenced to 60 days on the gang, and one negro, Pompey Mickings, tried for assault with intent to J Mil. He was found guilty, but Mr. . Sharpe, his attorney, has moved for a new trial, which will come up later. This morning the case of Sam W. Stockman, charged with the murder of Hampton. J,., Hartley last Christmas, will be called for trial. The docket is very heavy and with , the progress so far little will be accomplished in the criminal court this time. Dr. J. S. Matthews Commits Suicide. Baltimore, Md., Nov. 5.?In a cheap lodging house on east Baltimore street, this afternoon, Dr. J. Baxter Matthews of Greensboro, N. C., blew out his brains with a shot from a 32-caliber revolver. Dr. Matthews was conyictea March 9, 1996, at Greensboro, N. C., of the poisoning of his wife Dec., 1,1905. He had peen out of custody under bail r pending the decision of hi9 appeal for a new ferial, which was denied him, and relatives and bondsmen have been searching for him for some weeks that he might be taken before the court to be resentenced. In th* absence of any definite reason for his taking his life it is supposed that he did so rather than serve the sentence, said to be 20 years in the penitentiary, to be imposed upon him. Immediately after his conviction, which was of murder in the second degree, Dr. Matthews became a paient at Mount Hope Retreat, near this * funntmonf city, ana was mere uijuci ul catiix^xit for the morphine and liquor habits for some months, finally being discharged ' as cured. u Mr. J. M. Roach, one of the best L. known of the older residents of Columbia, died in that city last Friday in tne 73rd year of his age. * impof erisiefl Soil Impoverished soil, like impoverished blood, needs a proper fertilizer. A chemist by analyzing the soil can tell you what fertilizer to use for different products. If your blood is impoverished vnnr rJrv?tnr will tell vou what I you need to fertilize it and give it the rich, red corpuscles that are lacking in it. It may be you need a tonic, but more likelv vou need a concentrated * fat food, and fat is the element lacking in your system. There is no fat food that is so easily digested and assimilated 'as Scott's Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil It will nourish and strengthen > the body when, milk and crearn fail to do it.
