COTTON GOODS, FOREIGN TEADE. Important Bill Passed by the Senate 1-1- r>__* Aft I LUUKiny ffiiu Dcsi iiicuncid--aycnio to be Sent Out by Commerce Department. Washington, May 24. ? Senators Overman, of North Carolina, and Bacon, of Georgia, have succeeded in having the senate pass a bill that means much to the Southern cotton mill interests. That is the bill appropriating $20,000 for the purpose of making investigations as to the best markets for cotton goods in foreign fields. This bill has been before the senate for some time and has encount 'ered a sharp fight from those who opposed the spending of government money for the exploitation of new fields for cotton goods. The bill provides that agents, to be sent out under the direction of the department of commerce and labor, are to make full investigations and report as to the opportunities for and the obstacles against the enlargement of our export trade in cotton goods, the kind and qualities of goods in demand, the shipping facilities, freight rates, and the commercial and financial agencies necessary for the successful competition of our cotton manufacturers and exporters in foreign trade; to collect full lines of the standard specimens of all cotton products consumed there, to exhibit them in the different cotton mill and industrial centers of the United States, classified, labeled, and arranged for exhibition, with complete informatic n i as to the countries in which they are j produced, wholesale and retail prices, | the patterns in demand by different j localities, and by different classes of consumers, and the essential condi- | tions of competition to be met in each | market for each kind of goods. I The great importance of this bill will readily be seen when it is taken into consideration that the manufactured products, including cotton yarn, made abroad from cotton shipped from the United States, aggregate $800,000,000 a year, while the part of American manufacture which is shipped abroad is only $60,000,000. ' It is said that the amount of the cotton crop in its unmanufactured raw state goes abroad, excluding the amount of raw cotton consumed by our factories at home, represents every year more j than all the gold that is produced in | all the mines of the world.?Washing- ; ton Cor. to Columbia Reccrd. t i Sciatica Cured After Twenty Years of Torture. Bslisve in Your Bov. 1 ** J The other day we heard a father j say that his boy was "no account,"; and we could not but reflect that there } is a small chance for a boy when his \ father has no hope for him. We believe in any boy. If he be given a chance, a fair field and no favors, he j will some day be heard from. The boy who gives promise of "going to ! the dogs," needs the same helping | hand that you would extend to a ! drowning person. There are many j swollen streams in a boy's life, and j the bridges which he must cross are J often weak. He needs your encour- j agement and assistance to help him j across, less perchance he sink. The ! boy is worth saving, he is entitled to ! your protection. When the paternal \ hand is withdrawn, whose assistance j can he depend on? There comes a j crisis in everybody's life, a period | when he must choose between the j high road and the low. It is at that time he needs your prompting; yet we often see him turned aside by the criticisms of sisters, the taunts of older brothers, and the half hearted en- j couragement of the father who once i stood at the same forks of the road, j Some of the greatest men the coun- j try has produced had a rough time of j it in their youth. They were gener- j ally put down by the gossips as real j Cures Stomach and Liver | trouble and j) Chronic Constipation. bad ones. The penitentiary and the scaffold were often predicted for them, yet they came out on top?a credit to their parents and to their country. A boy has a certain amount of animal spirit. He may run wild like a colt for a time, but if he is never driven away from the home which is his tether he will alwavs return to the fold, a better and a braver man. Give your boy a chance. Tell him that you believe in him; that you know he will weather all the storms, and you have laid the foundation for a staunch manhood, a reputable and worthy citizenship. This world would be a dreary old place without boys. The sun would not shine so bright, nor would the birds sing so sweetly if they were not with us. Boys were never made to be saints; their faults will disappear as they advance in life. Knowing that, you should never complain of you: lad.?Asheville Citizen. INCREASE TEE WAGES. Voluntary Raise by the Mills?Bright Outlook for New England Manufacturers. Danelson, Conn., May 24.?Notices were posted in the cotton mills of new London and Windham counties of a ten per cent, increase of wages to take effect at once. The increase effects 20,000, operatives and numerous flourishing mills along this section of the State. The cotton manufacturing industry was never in a more prosperous state than at present. There is a strong market for cotton goods and cotton market is favorable to manufacturers. Many of the mills are running over-time and have orders that will keep them busy for a year ahead* The increase comes as a complete surprise to the hands affected. Best for Women and Children. We are frequently?too frequently? told of the great things men do; how they'dig into the earth or build upon the earth or dam up the waters and irrigate the earth, but human enterprises of which we beast so much sink into insignificance when compared to the records achived by the ordinary hen. The cackle of the hen that has laid | an egg is modest and unobtrustive | compared with men's noisy bluster about their business. But in proportion to the noise made, j the hen has the far more genuine substance. In two months" she lays more value than the annual production of all the ' gold mines of the United States. Everv three months she produces more than the year's production of pig iron, Her eggs for six months are worth more wealth than the capital stock of all the banks in the New York clearing house. In less than two years she could pa}* off the national debt. The annual report of the secretary of agriculture shows that last year the eggs of the United States were worth more than the cotton or the wheat, more than all the potatoes, the barley, the tobacco, the sugar cane and the rice. They practically equal the dairy product and are surpassed only by the corn crop of a bumper corn year. And the hen made a new record last week. On one day there were received in New York over 40,000 cases containing 15,125,000 eggs. The hen's business for one day in one city amounted to 8250,000. This is also the reason why thousands upon thousands of women are corresponding with Mrs. Pinkham, daughterin-law of Lvdia E. Pinkham, at Lynn, Mass. To her they can confide every detail of their illness, and from her great knowledge, obtained from year* of experience in treating female ills, Mrs. Pinkham can advise sick women more wisely than the local physician. Before I wrote to you telling yon how I felt, I had doctored for over two years steady, and spent lots of money in medicines besides, but it all failed to do me any good. 1 had female trouble and would daily have faint ing spells, backache, bearing-down pains, and my monthly periods were very irregular and finally ceased.
