A copy of the first issue of the Carolina Field, a new industrial journal, published at Georgetown by the Carolina Field Publishing Co, has reached this. office. The initial , somber presents quite a creditable appearance both as to matter and make up. Mr. James Henry Rice, . Jr., its genial editor, is a graceful and forceful writer which makes his pen attractive and instructive to his read| ers. We dare say that there is no man in the State better qualified than he to lead in the important work of j which the Field is the exponent?the settlement and development of the almost unlimited possibilities of the great Fee Dee section. ? Lexington farmers, as a rule, have solved the cotton problem for themselves and to their own satisfaction' and nrofit For some years they have raised their own supplies and made cotton the surplus crop. ? The town of Marquette, Kansas, 1 was partly wrecked by a tornado yesterday. Twenty-six persons were killed and many others were wounded, some of the wounded will probably die. v= The State Press Association will meet at White Stone Springs July 11-14. AU arrangements for the gathering of ths members of the - Fourth Estate, are being perfected. France has sent orders to the civil ? and naval authorities in French Indo-Cbina that the Russian fleet must not use French waters for a i nnnfn ra r o J ===== , r J ; Several dogs supposed fco have gooe mad, and which were running g:V am nek the streets of Newberry were killed in that town during the past - several days. ? Colombia has voted bonds for water works. The vote was light? 142 for and 14 against If- ? . , v Plant less cotton and more food supplies. ======= A Ssrieus Accident. Last Thursday, while trying to bore a hole in a piece of wood at the crate and basket factory of W. B. Bast, at Swansea, the auger caught in the clothes of Ioes Carter and in a moment almost disemboweled him. He is seriously if cot fatally injured. He was not employed at the factory, but was simply playing around, and had been told to get away by the foreman. Railroad Control. Denver, Col., May 9 ?President Roosevelt in a speech last night at a banquet tendered by the chamber of commerce made the unqualified declaration that the federal government should supervise and control all large corporations. Denies That He Smuggled. Norfolk, V i, May 9 ?Richard G. Banks, collector of this port, said today that .some 60 packages * of articles of foreign goods have been received at the local custom house from the United States collier Brutus, now at the Norfolk navy yard. The collector said that thus ' far only a portion of the packages 1 have been examined, but their value j is believed to be perhaps $3,000.'In reply to an intimation that there was something irregular about the transaction, the collector said that there had been no seizure, no smuggling nor attempt to smuggle. A gang of counterfeiters has been rounded up after a long chase by Uncle Sam's secret service men and a large quantity of the queer captured. Bring or send in your dues to the Dispatch. Fat is the best means of overcoming them; cod liver oil makes the best and healthiest fat and SCOTT'S EMULSION is the easiest and most effective form of cod liver oil. Here's a natural order of things that shows why Scott's Emulsion is of so much value in all cases of scrofula and consumption. More fat, more weight, more nourishment, that's why.
