For awhile it blew great guns and assumed cyclonic proportions and really looked as if it would sweep everything before it, but the ^ wind lulled and the rain ceased when the sunshine came bursting through the scattering clouds as bright and smiling as a nymph. Reports coming in shows that the ^ storm was general and that in some places considerable hail fell, but as far as we have been able to ascertain no damage was done to crops except here and there the overflow of water washed up some corn. State Pension Board. Columbia Evening Record, May 1. The State Pension Board will meet some time next week for the purpose of going over the applications which were returned in the respective counties for correction or revision. ~ The number of mistakes made by the county boards this year were much larger than usual. In Richland, for instance, the entire batch of QTvrili/>ftfcinns hod tf> he Sent back be cause the county board had endorsed them all in the wrong place. In addition to mistakes like there, which are technical, it was shown that there was great deal of carelessness in some of the counties in passing and recommending pensions to persons who were not entitled to them. The state board tries as much as it can to stop these fraudulent pension?, for they are so known in law, but all of them cannot be caught and there are no doubt many receiving pensions who are not entitled to them. 0 It is said that the President's desk is literally piled up with important business that has accumulated during his absence from Washington in the Wild and Wooly West hunting bears. The State failed to make out a case against him and he was discharged. There were quite a number of prominent residents of Brookland in town that day as witnesses. This makes the second attempt the State has made to hold Mr. Boyer for the court of sessions and in both instances it failed for the lack of evidence. Solicitor Timmerman represented the State and Messrs. Nelson & Nelson, of Columbia, and F. E Dreher, Esq., of this place, appeared for the defense. I A. J.
