Fool Fops in Finery. The most gorgeous costume ball New Yjrk has known in several years was tnat given at Sherry's by Mr James H*zeu Hyde recently. What it cost to one knows except Mr Syde and bis bookkeeper?: but we ire told by the Sun that some of those who made a superficial survey ,\f f ka nstiurnl nr^na ra finn u frir KJi buc gcutioi J/IV uwtvuu ?vs *. vuv -vent guessed that when all the bills *ere settled tbev would amount to nore thao $100 000. There were bout four hundred persons present Hid they appeared iu the most elab rate costumes of the Eighteenth Ceuiury period Mr. H?zen wore the evening dress of the New York Coaching Club, aDd Mr. Clarence rt:cfcey w.:re the Mradcw Crook veniDg dress of pink, a sa'.in coat ined with light blue, with blue satin j ft^teoingp, and black satin breeches, j Mrs Clarence Mackey appeared in a gown of white gauze over satin i made in princess stjle and heavily embroidered with silver. It wis trimmed with silver bands studded with turquoises. About the square- j cut neck, were strings of turquoises and upon the quefdy bead there j rested a tiara ot turquoises set in pearls aDd nearly eight inches high, each of itb poiDts tipped by a large pearl, and the centre of the confection. or whatever it was called, was surmounted by a little cross. An unusual feature attending Mrs. Mackey'a appearance was that her traiD wai upheld by two little negro boys dressed in pink satin, their bare legs showing between their piDk breeches j anrt and nint slinnprs That must I ~? *? r v-rr have been perfectly lovely. There were other wonderfully beautiful and expensive costumes worn by the ladies present, and the men, if anything, were even more elaborately gowned. For example, Mr. R bert Goelefc appeared in white eatin embroidered in gold and with embroidered waistcoat of pale pink moire; Mr J^mes A. Stillman in lilac brocade and silver of the Louis XVI eon; Mr James A. Burden, Jr., in white *atiD, ?? if be were a courtier I the Louis XVI period; Mr. Arthur j Iselio io piDk eat,in. lined with blue of the Meadow Brook Hunt style, and Mr J D Roman Baldwin, Mr. Rilph Pulitzer and Mr. Franfe Crownin-bield in brocade, gold braid and iace. We note among the invited guests ] the name of Col. George Harvey, but i the iSun fails to note what be wore | on this occasion. If it is not asking j too much we wish that our New j York contemporary would explain for the benefit of Col. Harvey's South Carolina friends and constituents how be was gowned. Ooe of this Association's avowed objects is to cause a reduction in the amount of fertilizers ; used by Southern cotton planters. I The fertilizer companies, however, take a broader and wiser view. The Southern farmers are their cheif customers, not only in this year, but in all years. Unless they have ability .to buy, the fertilizer men cannot expect to Bell. The farmers are striving to gain the position where they will have a voice iD fixing the pricp j of their commodity. O'ber producers occupy such a position dow and the farmers believe that as a condition precedent to reaching it intelligent restriction must be place about production. The logic in this is irresistible. The fertilizer companies understand further that the education movement implies do fi^ht upon them Curtailing fertilizers has no other object than to curtail the cot.toD crop of 1005. There is do disposition to lessen the amount of fertilizers used for wheat, potatoes and other crops j While the fertilizer companies have exhibited good business judgment in thus cooperating with tDe farmers, they show a liberal spirit. The* m?bfl if. thai ihpv kppn in mind tbeir mutuality of interests with Southern farmers and give to the latter assurance that they may be depended upon as allies when the Southern farming industry is menaced. , * ? i To Mothers ia This Towa.
