?II IM^t.. The Lexington Dispatch. j Wednesday, Jane 22, 1934. 1 North Carolina Supsrstitions. j How Dutch Farmers Kill Hogs and ' Plant Seed by the Moon. ] i The Dutch farmers of Rowan j , eounty are among North Carolina's I . icost prosperous aDd most interesting people: they live well, save money, ' and improve in every way. Thrift is ( virtue with them. They are great believers in signs and old sayings; , tfaey do things by the moon. Before building a worm fence the Dutch always watch the moot; it mast be right or the fence will sink into the ground. Tee bottom rail must be put down when the little ( moon is turned up, so that it will not 1 Bink into tbe ground. To prove that this is the right sort of doctrine lets ( person make an experiment with two i bricks ;put down one when the little moon is up and tbe other while 'it is i down and it will be noticed that the one laid when the moon was down ; will go into the ground and that the other will remain as left If one would cover his house well ! be must make the boards when the < little moon is turned down. That is j easy; the boards will keep their shape if riven then. But, on the other hand, i if made while the little moon is tamed cp the boards will cup up at i the ends when exposed to the weather. I have seen many a board turn up at the end, but never knew what did it until now. ( The moon must be right when a 1 Dutchman kills his hogs. If the hogs ' v are killed when the little moon is on the decrease the meat will shrink, j bat if killed when the little moon is < on the increase it will swell. 1 To have good turnips one must 1 plant on Israel's day?that is in Au- : gust; If corn is planted when the i little moon points up, the ears will 1 grow too near the top. The ears gets more nourishment near the ground. ! The Datch have what i3 known as | . Fasnacht (I guess that is the way to ' spell it) day?the day before Ash Wednesday; they must have Fasnacht fritters then or the crop will not be good. I was in Saulisbury on last Ascen- ' sion day and the town was full of ' country people. That is a Dutch holiday. No work is done on Ascen- ( sion day. It is a day of rest and - pleasure. If the first visitor to a home that day is a man, all the eggs ' that are setting will hatch roosters; if a womaD, pnlleta will prevail. Therefore a man is an unwelcome guest early in the morning on Ascension day. ' It is not right to carry out the ashes between Christmas and New Year's day; that brings bad luck. If a person would court good luck he or she must pull off the left shoe ! first on going to bed, and, to keep it up, put the right on first in the morning. If a farmer puts out manure or fertilizers when the little moon points op, it will stay, but if the little moon points down it will leach out. There are a thousand and one of these eigne and sayings if they could be oollected: many of them are met in other than Dutch communities. I State of Ohio, City of Toledo, ) j Lucas County j es. New York, June 15.?The eicur- | 8ion steam boat General Slocum was destroyed by fire about ten o'clock this morning, off North Brothers Island. A telephone message from :he island eavs many persons lost j their lives. The vessel took fire in the upper works and tbe flames I 3pread rapidly. The pilot steered J for the shore, but before the boat ^ould be beached she was a mass Gf dames from stem to stern. The j Slocum carried an excursion party j umbering nearly 1,600, of whom mors than half were children. Many jumped overboard aDd were drowned while others were burned to death on the boat. The telephone operator at North Brothers Island says the water near the island was fall of floating bodies. Quite a number was saved, and they are being cared for at the island. Tbe Slocum was an immense triple decker. Tbe latest reports received indicates that at least 700 were )o3t. The police recovered a number of bodies, mostly those of women and children. A musician on board of the ill fated steamer says he, with bi3 wife and three children were aboard. Suddenly the blaze sprang up from tbe lower deck. A panic i followed. He was thrown overboard i with one child. He says everything was the wildest excitement on the boat which had women and children of St Mark's Sunday school, East Sixth street aboard.
