Marsh, who for many years occupied the chair of paleontology at Yale and who at his death left a scientific collection of great value to the university, usod to delight to telling the following story: One morning he was walking down a New Haven street when he met a negro driving a horse which had a curiously malformed hoof. "When ycur horse dies," said the professor to the old darkey, "I will crive von S3 for that hoof if vou will e-.-., cut it off and bring it to me." ' Very well, sab," was th8 reply, and borse and driver disappeared. Two hours later, when the professor reached home, he found the negro, who had been impatiently awaiting him for an hour. The question of the relative nutritive value of different kinds of bread is discussed, from the scientific point of view, in an article in the current Harper's Weekly by Harry Snjder, chemist of the United States Agricultural Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. Some recent trials made by the Department of Agriculture have shown some interesting results, says Mr. Snyder. A number of men in sound health? working men, students, athletes, thin and fat men?were chosen as subjects. In one set of tests the men were fed for several days on graham bread and milk, then white /bread was substituted for the graham. The conclusion reached was that the graham dour contained the highest and the patent flour the lowest percentage of total protein (glutinous matter,) but that the proportions of digestible protein and available energy in the patent flour were larger than in either the entire wheat or the graham flour. Oa the whole, the question seems to be settled in favor of white bread. State of Ohio, City of Toledo, ) Lucas County j Frank J. Cheney makes oath that be is the senior partner of tbe firm of F. J.
