Russia seems to have the key to the Chinese, puzzle, but refuses to unlock the door. In the meantime the other nations, ^particularly England and Japan, are fretitng and chafing over the uncertainties of the situation. I ,<?- To Cui I Take Laxative Broir A Growing School. Six years ago 0. D. Seay was elected principal of The Palmetto Collegiate Institute, at that time only one assistant was neccessary. The enrolment has increased so much that six teachers have been elected to teach next session. When the first year or this school had closed it was found that 125 scholars had been enrolled. Laet 3 ear there were 233 students in attendance. The first session was held in two rooms, next will have five large and commodious rooms in which to accommodate the growing demands. The first year about three or four boardiDg and day students were enrolled, last year there were 61 of this class. For two years there were no graduates, but sinc9 then eighteen have been awarded diplomas. From the above facts it will be seen that three times as many teachers are necessary now as at first, that the enrollment has almost doubled itself; that nearly twice as many rooms have been provided for next session, that the number of boarding students has been multiplied by fifteen; that there have been a large number of graduates in the past few years. The foregoing figures tell in modeet but most convincing language the marvelous growth of the Palmetto Collegiate Institute in the last six j years. Just think of an institution of learning, doubling and thribling in nKocrn TT7 nrlri nrr a in ajuiuo'j c yci jf ^uaog ui no nviatugg tu the short space of six years. When we consider the circumstances against which this wonderful record has been made it is to be doubted very much if there is another institution of its kind in the state that can boast of such progress. With the enlarged and competent faculty, the new building, the enviable record of the past session, the prospects of thelnstitule are so flattering as to more ihan fulfill the expectations of the most sanguine. Camp Stea&man to Meet. The Ninth Annual meeting of Camp SteadmaD, No. 668, U. C. V, will be held in the court house at this place on Tuesday, August lltb, 1903, at 10 a. m.
