' A man who was too economical to take a paper sent hie little boy to borrow the copy taken by his neighbor. In his baste the boy ran over a four dollar stand of bees and in ten minutes looked like a "water summer equash." His cries reached his father, who ran to his assistance, i and, failing to see a barbed wire fence, ran into it, breaking it down, cutting a handful of fleah from bis anatomy and ruining a four dollar pair of pants. The old cow took j - * - *?? I advantage of tne gap m me ieuw, got into the corn held and killed herself eating green corn. Hearing tha racket, his wife ran, upsetting a four gallon churn full of rich cream into a basket of kittens, drowning the whole hock. In her hurry she dropped a seven dollar set of false teeth. The baby, left alone, crawled through the spilled milk into the parlor and ruined a twenty dollar carpet During the excitement, the oldest daughter ran away with the hired man, the dog broke up eleven setting hens, the calves got out and chewed the tails off of four ffoe thoroughbred colts. Rev. A. G. LEWIS. A Preventive of Snallpoz. Lettuce is an absolute preventive of smallpox. No one is ia the least particle of danger of catching smallpox who eats a little lettuce every day. Smallpox belongs to the scorbutic class of diseases. Sailers at sea deprived of fresh vegetables get scurvy. Scurvy is a typical scorbutic disease. Smallpox is another. Smnllnnt ftlwavs rages during the winter season when the poor people are deprived of fresh vegetable food. Celery and oDions are good for tbic* purpose, but there is such a long interval between their being gathered and being eaten that they lose most of tteir anti scorbutic properties. Lettuce is served shortly after it is picked and hence contains the valuable properties which will prevent smallpox. We say without the least hesitation or reserve that lettuce will prevent smallpox. It is a thousand times better than vaccination. It has no liabilities, like vaccination, to produce other diseases. We are willing to stake our professional reptation on the broad statement that any one who eats lettuce daily will not catch smallpox, whether he ! io nr not.?Medical Talk.
