Cromer of ]\<*wberry | College, was with Pastor Ballentine j last Sunday, in the interest of a new | building for this school. He made , a profound impression upon the people, s,nd received encouraging aid from them. A case that excited unusual interest was tried here last Saturday before Magistrate Richardson. Mr. J. G. Hiller bad sued the town of Chapin for damages to his buggy. Wbile driving through the streets of that town one night la9fc January, Mr. Hiller ran against an obstruction which tore his buggy in three pieces. He sued the council for $50. Mr. E. U. Shealy represented the plaintiff and Mr. G. T. Graham the defendant. The verdict was $15 for plaintiff,-with the defendant to pay the cost. Some of the roads are being worked. In a case or two where we knew the conditions, the overseers have hired hands with money paid as commutation tax, and the sections have been put in reasonable repair. Some of us are anxious to see what the chain gang will do for us during the present administration. Why should not some record be kept, showing just where the gang has worked at any given period 1 The roads as j they are now should certainly teach us a lesson. To the Editor of The Dispatch: Under a recent Act of Congress, I am authorized to nominate by the 4th day of April next a cadet to The Naval Academy at Annapolis from the Seventh Congressional District. All young men are eligible, who are bona fide residents of said Dis trict, and who are free from physical defects, and who will, in June next, be between the ages of 15 and 20 years. I will make this appointment by competitive examination, to be held in the Supreme Court room at Columbia, S. C. on Saturday, March 28fch, 1903, beginning at 9:30 o'clock, A. M. We are glad to see Mr. Cnarley Smith out again after a long spell of sickness. Well, boys, it'll soon be time to write April fools "to yer best girl." The sound of gee-haw can now be heard in all directions. Plenty of rain now-a-days. It seems that it will all rain out and leave ub none for summer, but the ' good Master knows best for us. The mail from LexiDgton to Stall suits the people very well, but you I can hear then say we ought to have free delivery. Mr. James Lucas, one of the oldest j men in our section and a prosperous i farmer in his day, is doing very well at his old place. The wheat crops are looking fine I in this section. We are pleased to hear that Simon Lucas and Ben Kyzer, who have been ! sick, are doing very well at this time. Parents, let me beg you to educate your children. To the Editor of the Dispatch: We have be3n having some very disagreeable weather for the last week. It seems as if Old Winter haB departed for thiB season, or at least some of the beautiful little spring flowers seem to think so, as they are dotting the earth everywhere and again making it beautiful. On account of the inclemency of the weather Sunday the service at Boiling Springs was not well attended. Rev. Henry preached an excellent sermon. Miss Emma Koon, c'aughter of Mr. H. W. Koon who is attending school at Lexingion, spent Sunday under the parental roof. Miss Edna Snelgrove, of Saluda, who has been attending the school taught by Miss Lizzie Seay, is cor tinuing her studies in the Institute boarding in the home of Mr. George Corley. The free school at the Institute closes Friday a week, March 27th. Afterwards a pay school will be carried on to which it is hoped every patron wiil send. We will now find Mr. Comptom Lybrand behind the counters of Mr. D. F. Shumpert, at Pelion. Comp is a popular young man and is ad mired by bis many friends. There are still several cases of love sickness in this section. Don't know how they are. We have had some very warm weather for the past few days. Mr. S. R. Smith is still our saw mill man. He was baptized in infancy and at his death was a member of Cedar Grove Evangelical Lutheran church. He graduated at the Baltimore Medical College 1891, aud practiced his profession until death. September 6, 1890 he was married to Victoria Eargle. To this union were born 6 children. 1 dead. He leaves father, mother, 1 brother, 2 sisters, a wife and 5 children to mourn his departure.
