The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, February 18,1903. 9 1 Bandom Thoughts. Greenville is plastering herself all over with vanity on account of the prospective establishment of a cigar factory in that city. Germany it seems is just spoiling for a fight. If she keeps on monkeying with Uncle Sam it is morally eerfcain she will get a real good spanking. Uncle Sam's patience endureth not forever, and it is proverbial that fee is long suffering, but when be is nrrmRPfl something is noine to hap pen and that pretty quick. Jake Hines, a young negro buck, suspected of stealing meat, was visisted by a party of 10 or 12 white cap3 at his home on Young's Island, in Colleton county, a few nights 8go, . and severely whipped. His wounds have since proved fatal. No meat was found in the house, but three sacks of guano were hid under bis bed. He denied stealing them but implicated another negro in the theft. ' The way of the transgressor is hard and the road thereof leads to death.'' The Aiken Times says there is quite a lot of complaint made about the inferior quality of kerosene oil which is being sold in that town at 20 cents per gallon. Tbe same complaint comes from many other towns in this State, and the evil is present with us here in Lexington. The patience and temper of the good housewives are being stretched to the point where longer forbearance ceases to be a virtue and the voice of long and continued complaint is heard in the land and, like Banquo's ghost, will not down until the evil is abated and Standard Oil Co., again furnishes an unadulterated illuminating oil. The world is growing older every day. It has withstood the storms . and vicissitudes of the warring elev .? ments since the dawn of that glorious day "When the Morning Stars sang togetbenibr joy" ages and ages ago. Yet, notwithstanding she has been ^ . .3 nWnnt Kn PafVicr ?1CKEU oyu uuucu auuuu uj ?.< ?(*<.* Time, Bhe is as beautiful and bright * today as the time when the first streak of light cast its refulgent beams across the void and shapeless mase of > wild raging waters. Theife is nothing little or mean about this atd world of oars. With a lavish hand she has contributed from her hat storehouses everything necessary for the happiness, comfort and enjoyment of man, and if be does not accept the golden clusters of fruits and the rich gifts placed at his disposal, and persists in looking upon the shadowy side of nature, be has only himself to blame for bis failure to do art A wave of homicidal mania seems to be sweeping over the State. Almost daily the papers bring us shocking accounts of tragedies in which human life is ruthlessly, if not wontonly taken. These occurrences are deplorable and are evidences of an unhealthy state of public morals and a depraved condition of public sentiment. They unerringly point to the fact that there is something radically wrong somewhere, a screw loose, or a friction in the machinery of our body politic. We boast of our high state of Christian civilization and our advanced enlightenment, and yet we turn right around with our boast scarcely cold upon our lips, and take the law into our hand and with a deadly weapon slay our brother to revenge some real or fancid wrong. There is most assuredly a very fertile field in this as well as other States, for the moral reformer to use his best endeavors. The habeas corpus proceedings in the case of th6 State of South Carolina vs. Col. James K. Tillman, charged with the murder of Editor N. G. Gonzales, were commenced before Chief Justice Pope in chambers at Newberry on last Thursday. Several affidavits were * submitted which outlined the ground upon which the defense will be conducted. The plea of self defense was entered by Coi. Tillman. On motion made by Solicitor Thurmond, on part of the prosecution, the hearing was postponed until tomorrow, Thursday, the 10th instant, when it will be resumed in j the Supreme Court room in Columbia. The motion was sustained on j j the ground that counsel for defense | had not submitted to State's counsel | the affidavits presented, and State's j counsel, therefore, had no opportu- ! nity for reply. The consensus of opinion hereabouts is that Col. Tillman's application for bail will be granted but as to the amount of the bond there is a wide divergence. Tendency cf the Times. Tiie tendency of medical science is toward preventive measures. The best thought of the world is being given to the sutjict. It is easier and better to prevent than to cute. Is has been fully demonstrated that pneumonia, one of the most dangerous diseases that medical men have to contend with, can be prevented by the use of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. Pneumonia always results from a cold or from an attack of influenza (grip), and it has been observed that this remedy counteracts any tendency of these diseases toward pneumonia. This has been fully proven in many thousands of cases in which this remedy has been used duriDg the great prevalence of colds and grip in recent years, and can be relied upon with implicit confidence. Pneumonia often results from a slight cold when no danger is apprehended until it is suddenly discovered that there is fever and difficulty in breathing and pains in the chest, then it is announced that the patient has pneumonia. Be on the safe side and take Chamberlain's Cough Kom edy as soon as the cold is contractedIt always cures. For sale by the Kaufmann Drug Co. Pay for Cuban Soldiers.
