The Lexington Dispatch ' 7 Wednesday, January 21, 1903. , Some Possibilities. No loDger does it appear that defeat for the Democrats is inevitable in the next campaign. There is a chance for their success, and the prospects brighten as the struggle approaches. With hope of victory has come search for suitable material for leadership. Three name3 have been suggested, Gorman, Onley an4 Parker. The last name is now beiDg boomed with ? - - 4. ?- ~ f t"l Q cno. 21 psrsibitfucy wliiuu lucpuco nuv cuo~ picion that it is systematic. Judge Alton B. Parker is a very worthy New York jurist and Democrat. For several campaigns he might hkve had the Democratic nomination for Governor of New York but declined the honor, for what reason is not cVrtain, although it may be surmised t^at be was unwilling to be made a victim of certain defeat. There is not a blemish upon the reputation of Judge v Parker, and his ability as a judge and lawyer has smple attestation. In na tional politics, however, be is practieallv unknown, and the wisdom of ? ? nominating a man with a local reputation alone to recommend him will be seriously questioned. Arthur Pue Gorman will have a following in the convention unl&s all signs fail. He has strong and powerful advocates, and, being a past master in the art of politics, will make the best showing possible with his support. Gorman is too much of manipulator, however, to make an ideal candidate, and the probabilities against his selection are very great. There has been an unmistakable tide toward Richard Onley in the past few months, growing in volume as it progresses. Onley is unquestionably one of the biggest men in American. He demonstrated his capacity and backbone while Attorney General and Secretary of State respectively in the Cleveland cabinet. He is an American to bis finger tips. His reply to Eogland on the Venezuelan af fair ranks witb the greatest state papers of the cation. It may be urged against him that he hails from a Republican State, but Ohley is probably stronger in New York than any other candid*1 e would be, and New York holds the key to the situation. The Democrats most carry New York to win. The history of the party demonstrates that, and the results of the latest eler tioD, when the West returned to its Republican love confirm it. It was a mixim of the late lamented Thomas B. Rsed that he who pro ^ -.1 i. _ L - pnesiea concerning poimcai even is happen within one hundred years was a fool with emphasis. The uncertainty of politics adds seme weight to the maxim, bot one is taking little risk in predicting that Richard Onley will be a potential factor in the next National Democratic Convention. The youDger partner, thinking to take a "rise" out of Billy, said: 'T say, Billy, did you ever know of a painter going to heaven?" "Yes," replied Billy, "I knew of one once." "But do you think he stayed there?" "Well, I did hear they tried to put him out." "And they did not succeed?" "No* According to latest accounts they had not succeeded " "Why, how was that?"
