C., WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20. 1901. Gaston's Doings. To the Editor of the Dispatch: "It's cold and dark and dreary. And it rains, and the wind is never weary." Abundance of rain, And plenty cold Bat our people get there the same, And never scold, The plowman's tune can now be heard, As he tQrns the soil^.^-? To make his biftter and bread, By the efforts of his daily toil. Preparations are developing for large crops. Abundance of fertilizers are being hauled. The small grain crop looks rather sick since the recent cold snap; but none are killed so far as we can learn. Early oats look quite promising. Magistrate elect G.eo. W. .found has been commissioned and will soon be readj to deal out justice to the transgressors of the peace. We feel our interests safe under the ruliDgs of this "sage"' of Gaston. Lee N. Fallaw, who has been connected with the Sphaler establishment for several years as bookkeeper for the same, has accepted a position with the Dosier Lumber Company of Columbia, S. C. We wish him an abundance of success in his new held of labor. Miss Leila Chitty of Blackville, is visiting Mrs. G. A. Goodwin. Mr. Wm. McNeil, in the employ of the S. A L Ity. Co, is again a citizen of cor town. Will was here several years ago and made maoy friends, who will be glad to welcome turn Dae*. There is a young man who goes courting when he can. Where you can sell jour pease, Get a chair and sit with ease; Bay bread and cheese, And eat 'em if you please. Since our last, death has been in our midst and claimed as his victim Jasper, the only son of our fellow oountryman Mr. W. F. Mack. It was certainly a sad blow for Mr. Mack as Jasper was the only child The funeral services were conducted by T. F. Rivers. He leaves a wife and four children. We deeply sympathize with the unfortunate family in their misfortune and sore trials. Cupid has been at work and as a result an elopement was effected by the contracting parties, Mr. Calvin Caasady alias Melchirsadec and Mrs. Ida Perry. May they be happy and live at ease, be kind to each other ! and do as they please. Can't onr Legislature enact seme stringent measure in regard to our youths smoking cigarettes? It does seem to me that some measure may be effected to prevent it. Mrs. J. F. Fallaw has been sick for some time. We hope ere long she may be up and at her post of duty. Should the present happy relations exist and good health continue in the Felix family, you may again hear from Billy Felix. La Grippe Quickly Cured. Reflections of a Bachelor. One of the first signs that a girl is in love when she gets an idea that it is indelicate to eat pie. Sometimes you see a woman who is too much of a lady to remember that she is anything else. A woman's clothes has more to do with her religion than her religion has to do with her clothes. A man never takes out a life insur- ance policy for his wife without wondering whether he isn't putting away good money for some other man. The first month a man is married be kisses bis wife as a baby does when a lady bas got four of its toes in ber mouth and is preteudiDg to eat them.
