The Lexington Dispatch Burned April 25th; rebuilt July 19. 1894. G. M. HARMAN. Editor and .Publisher. y LEXINGTON. S. C~ WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 2*2, 1900. The scratching plan rebounded on the scratchers. Mrs. Butler, the wife of Ger. ]V.r. C. Butler, and the daughter of the late Governor Pickens, the war Governor of South Carolina, is dead. Th?- scratching of Senator Till man's name was done mostly by his nnrelentiBg political enemies who only wanted a sufficient excuse for scratching his name any way. A dispatch from Lord Roberts at Pretoria to the home government at j London, states that President Kruger is anxious to surrender if favorable terms can be secured. Unconditional surrender is the only term cffered. O I The commander of the Russian forces in China has forbidden the other commanders there communicating with the Chinese in any manner because Russia has declared war against China. The situation is ex j tremelv critical and is likely to lead j to grave complications and envolve Russia in serious trouble with the other nations. Col??nel Hoyt and Governor McSweeney will have to run the gubernatorial race over. The indications are that Colonel Hoyt developed his fall strength in the election held Tuesday and that it will be impossible for him to pick up enough votes to change his apparent defeat into victory. Governor McSweeney, on the other hand, has a large contingent of votes to draw upon, which makes bis nomination almost an as sured fact. ? Sensational reports have been received from China to the effect that the Boxers are gathering in large numbers in and around Pekinfor the purpose of attacking the allied forces and recaDturiner the Celestial city. The American forces under General Chaffee have taken a gallant and congpicious part in all the engagements in the Flowery Kingdom, and for heroism, bravery and fightiDg qualities in general, have won the admiration and respect of the commanders and soldiers of the allied armies. ~ Resolutions of Thanks. At a meeting of the teachers on the last day of the Summer School, at this place, the fallowing resolutions were adopted: We, the teachers attending Lexingl i_ c o_ i i i : (ou county oummer ocuooi, ueug about to return to our various homes, after a pleasant and profitable attendance of four weeks, think proper to give expression to our appreciation and gratitude, be it therefore Resolved, That we return thanks to the Faculty, Professors Hamby and George, and officers of Lexington county Summer School for their zeal, m interest, and uniform kindness shown us in all official and private relations. Resolved That we return thanks to the citizens of Lexington for the kindness shown us duriDg our stay among them. Resolved, That we recognize Summer Schools the best means of improving ourselves under guidance, and that our thanks are due to Hor. John J. McMaban, who has manifested great interest in the public schools and their teachers. Resolved, That the Lexington Dispatch and the State be requested to publish above resolutions. W D ScVoe be g, Chairman. J V Smith, Secretary. Story of a Pigeon. Mr. Mai Harman who lives just south of the town at the cotton mill, has a pigeon named Bill. Bill was brought here from Aiken, S. C. All Bill's wives and companions have died, and no mate can be kept for him very long. Of course, this is no fault of Bill's. He spends^his time with the chickens and is a favorite h?t. with Mr. Harman'a children. A month or so ago Bill exhibited a mania for buildiDg nests. This seemed the more straDge since Bill is certainly a male bird. These nests were destroyed time and again. At last Bill built a nest in Mr. Barman's dwelling. The nest was under a table where it gave no one any special inconvenience, and so Bill was net immediately disturbed. Finally Mr. Haiman's little girl slipped two hen eggs to Bill. Biil seemed proud of them from the very first, sat on them quite faithfully, and in due time two chickens were hatched. The chickens are doing well, are proud of Bill as their foster J TT?11 i_ " 1 U parent, ana ?>111 is cooing anu uuwi"g more now than ever. Of course, | *ve know strange things are liable to happen, but we have never seen or heard of anything exactly like this. If you call od Mr. Harman he will take pleasure in showing you his wonderful pigeon. j r Sei Vv ! t PRECINCTS. f St Batesburg 5 Leesville {< Croufc'3 Siore '< Oesa n r* XT C\ nonow ureea, ->o.
