The closing exercises of the school iaught at Union by Mr. Lewis MSmith, on March 16, was a pleasant md successful affair and was immensely enjoyed by all whose good 'ortune it was to be present and the ittle lads and lasses acquitted themselves in a manner highly creditabb dike to themselves and their inslruc < ;ors. Mr Harry W. Shuler died in the lospital in Augusta, Ga, at 12:20 'clock Tuesday morning from the Sects of the wound he received at Satesburg a week or two ago. Mr. Shuler is said to have been a >romiBing young man and was steemed and respected by a large ircle of warm personal friends. He pas well known throught the county nd was connected by family ties pith a large number of our best and ciost prominent citizens. His unimely and tragic death is greatly ieplored by the community in which 16 resided and our entire county generally. He will be buried to day. Mr. Shelton F. Perry who is harged with having done the shootog, was rearrested last Thursday ndis now in jail awaiting the June erm of court. B Backer, cf the Sandy Rau section, dud recently from the effects of an attack of typhoid fever. He was a good man and respected by a large circle of friends and acquaint ances. He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his departure. Mr. Thomas Dykes was in town on Tuesday and called in to see us. In the course of a pleasant conversation he showed us a copy of a letter dited at Liverpool, England, August, 1S20, written by his grandmother to bis father in this county where he resided, on the some place where Mr. Djkes eow lives. Mr. Dykes is one of the best farmers of his eection, lives at home and boards at the same place. Meeting of County Board of Equilization. There has been five cars of guano this year to one last year landed at Steadman's. Mr. W. L Qaattlebaum, our cotton ginner, expects to be on time for the cotton crop this year. He is making ; arrangements to put in a new gin and outfit, so he can do the work quick. Mr. R. G. Able is doing a big business near Steadman's, sawiog lumber. Though Mr. F. W. Quattlebaum is the "biggist" man, for it takes two horses to carry him. Mr. A. B. Quattlebaum, our turpentine dealer, is having it worked at the highest point this year. Mr. Paul Mims of Lewiedale, who has a large farm running near Steadman's, was in town last week and spent the night with his old friend, Mr. W. L Quattlebaum. Mr. W. L Quattlebaum has contracted with the railroad company to furnish them water at this place. Mr. H. J. Burgess will begin a merchandise business here soon. Then he'll look around for a female partner to share his profits and losees. Mr. H. Gantt is doing a lively cash business. The Quattlebaum boys are buying all the ties they can get. Mrs. Alfred Gunter has been visiting her daughter at this place who has been very sick with roseola, but we are glad to say that she is able to be up aad at her home duties again. She is kept busy with the mail, and her little boy, but he will soon be : large enough to go with his litt'e friends who go to see him every day.
