Hie Lexington Dispatch Burned April 25th; rebuilt July 19, 1894. G. M. HARMAN. Editor and Publisher. LEXINGTON. S. C., WFJNPSIUY. FELRUAl Y 21. 5?00 Swass:a'5 Dcings. To the E liter of the Dispatch: The weather for sometime has been cloudy and is very much like the accounts of many of the subscribers to the Dispatch?still unsettled. Last night at 4 o'clock the rain fall was severe for neaily aD hour and all the heavens gave evidence that her vast dominions were a fountain of tears so fieely shed on hill and dale and today yet appears as though nature is still a mourner and is weeping that the world by her tears may be blessed. The seasons are like our lives, the skies can't always becloudless nor can the sun shine always bright. Dr. Lang ford, to the regret of his suffering patients, has been confined for some days to his room. Mr. James Cjtes and family, from the Cidar Grove community, have moved to Swansea and occupy a neat and beautiful cottage built last year by Mr. Reynolds. The people of Swansea gives to Mr. Cotes and family a hearty aDd cordial welcome to Swansea. He is a prosperous farmer. The broed tire question is again up for consideration by the solons of the law making power of the State. It feems to have a rough time to find a place in our statute law. The question will be settled for all lime to ccme with any oDe who will try just ODe wagon with abroad tire. He will be ashamed of his own past life in using one to the abuse of the roads and bis poor stock as loDg as he did by such a simple prevention. A statute of that kind will do more for good roads in this land than a!l the road congress that ever assembled. It is to be hoped there will be enough men in the Legislature with a broad mind to make broad tires a certainly. It has been well said "by the confusion of argument truth is obtained."' A farmer told me yesterday that his wife bad lost "the most of her r.hiekena and she was afraid they was taking this .chicken complaint that they call cholera iufantum."' The burs, though very hurtful to the appearance of our town, and, although very destructive to the interests cf several of our citizens, ha3 not destroyed the future cf our business men nor the comfort of travelers while here. Mrs. L V. Gantt, and Mrs. C.trrie A. Nacaaaaker still offer cheap and ccmfcrtable bjard at their homes to the traveling public. The Mormon elders hav^ made their appearance in our neighborhood. Silus Ilutto has been confined to his room for several days with a severe cold. Spectator. February 14, 1900. 0 Scrofula to Consumption. Any one predisposed to Scrofula can never be healthy and vigorous. This taint in the blood naturally drifts into Consumption. Being such a deep-seated blood disease, Swift's Specific is the only known cure for Scrofula, because it is the only remedy which can reach the disease. Scrofula appeared on the head of my little grrandchild when only IS months old. Shortly after breaking out it spread rapidly all over her body. The scabs on the sores would peel d?T on the slightest touch, and the odor that wouid arise made the at cnosphere or the room sickening and unbearable. The disease next attacked the eyes, and we feared she 555y T^o? would lose her sight. Km- (5* Inent physioians from the ng? ] surrounding country were y* L?A f consulted, but could do I nothing to relieve the littie innocent, and gave it is their opinion that the case was hopeless and im- -^Brifr V* r^-b? possible to save the child's eyesight. It wa3 then that we decided to try" Swift's Specific. That medicine a t once made a speedy and complete cure. She is now a young lady, and has never had a sign of the disease to return. Mrs. Ruth Berkeley, Salina, Kan. Scrofula is an obstinate blood disease, and is beyond the reach of the average blood medicine. Swift's Specific S.S.S.rfLBiood is the only remedy equal to such deepseated diseases; it goes down to the very foundation an.? forces out every taint. It is purely vegetable, and is the only blood remedy guaranteed to contain no mercury, potash or other mineral substance whatever. Books mailed free by Swift Specific Company, Atlaalst, Georgia. A Happy Svsnt Escorted. Tu the Editor of the Dispatch: It is with deep sense of pardonable pride that the opportunity is now t ffbrded me to record a most happy and pleasant event which occurred on the fourth instant. Toere seeds to be a great bustle in the woili of labor. Business cf evt ry kind seems to bo on a 'oooiu. Men are looking forward to push their cLiins for political prefeimen': but there has been no less activity in the inaiiiiuoijidl world. The log belong to W. M. Kirby. This iind of conduct brought the citizens a a sta'e of fever heat and they teemed more determined to aveDge ,fcem?elves as to the whereabouts of he gang. Guilty parties were sus)ected and after close investigation, ipplicalion was made to the penientiary f..<r a blood hound. Ia this community several rery suspicious characters reside, md a new crowd consisting of Messrs. Here they found the vheelbarrow stained with blood, )lood stained shirts saturated with vater, a few yards from the house nore than a dozen chicken heads, et and feathers were unearthed. ^ warrant was secured and the house loselv searched 'where, new suits, nets, shirts, spectscles, rings, studs, ] lilts and many tine and valuable irticles were stored. LINKED WITH FOLLY. This is a story that belongs to the olden time. A certain lord, pleased with the sallies of his jester presented him witn a new bauble saying "Keep this Archie until you find a greater fool than yourself 10 bestow f on." One day the nobleman lay a-dying, u:d with his household went Archie to look his last upon his master's ( face and hear his voice once more. The jester stooped above his lord am: said " Master, why do you say good-by?' 1 4<I am going a journey Archie" was tin j feeble answer. "How long a journey?,: the jester asked. "Nay Archie I do not know." "Whither then does thy journey lead ? " "Neither do I know that Archie." "What provision hast thou made for this journey?" "None at all" sighed the nobleman. Archie looked long and hard ' in his master's face, then he placed his ; bauble in his lord's hand. "Take it" he ' said "for I have found a greater fool than ; myself." There is r.o greater folly than ignorance I where knowledge is possible and vitally necessary to safety and happiness, and yet ' tens of thousands of people walk this world - j .-11 _ ti? ? .-?. f linaeu >vim iouv. mn >in i^uwioih ui the conditions of life, ignorant of the constitution of their own bodies. Children grow to manhood and womanhood ignorant of the conditions under which nature governs. They break her laws recklessly. They exhaust themselves in the mistaken effort to "have a good lime" while they are young. Some day comes the shock when nature presents her overdraft account and demands payment. Sometimes it's heart trouble, sometimes the stomach fails of its functions, sometime the liver refuses to tug any longer at its load, or the kidneys balk at their burden. Sometimes, very often in- j deed, a red spot begins to burn on the cheeks, a hacking cough develops, the breath grows short, the strength oozes out at night in dripping sweat, and every i day the daily walk is shortened by a few steps as the strength fails. That's consumption. ; The theory is that consumption cannot ; be cured, and it's a theory so deeply rooted that time is wasted in combating it. Hut what is a cure in such a case? Suppose a man (or woman) with all the symptom- of consumption takes, as thousands and thousands have taken. Dr. Pierce's t-olden Medical Discovery, and lives on to a healthy, happy, hearty old age as these same thousands and thousands have- done, find dies in the allotted time of a lipencd life. Two positions are possible. You can Fav '"it was not rally eou-nmptiou he | had." (n it cat: be said " he redly di- d ?.f consumption after all."
