OVER AND OVER AGAIN. | < ! 1 JOSEPHIKE POLLABD. < Over and over again, No matter which way I turn, j 1 always find in the book of life , Some lesson I have to learn. I must take my turn at the mill, I must grind out the golden grain, i I must work at my task with a resolute will ] Over and over again. j "We cannot mease re the need I { Of even the tiniest flower, { < Nor check the flow of the golden sands That run through a single hour; But the morning dews must fall, And the sun and summer rain Must do their part, and perform it all Over and over again. Over and over again ( The brook through the meadow flows, And over and over again i The ponderous mill-wheel goes. ! Once doing will not suffice, I Though doing be not in vain; And a blessing failing us once or twice * May come if we try again. The path that has once been trod Is never so rough to the feet, And the lesson we once have learned Is never so hard to repeat, Though sorrowful tears must fall, i And the heart to its depths be driven With storm and tempest, we need them all To render us meet for heaven. i The Wannamaker Inquest. The Verdict Found by the Coroner's Jury at St. Matthew's, Thursday, 1 * 7 7 ^ ' - October 2d?The Testimony. The Coroner's inquest upon the j body of Capt. F. M. Wannamaker was tifeld at St. Matthews October 2, and the pxxys^turned & verdict that Capt. Wannamak^cfeific^hfs death by a wound inflicted with a knife in hands of Milledge L. Herlong. There were three eye witnesses to 1 the affair who gave testimony before < the jnry, and, as their stories all j agree, the tale is best told by their , testimony, which is given in sub- ( stance below. j EYE WITNESSES TELL THE TALE. 3 These three witnesses are W. T. ( Connelly, W. H. Wise and O. H. ' Wienges, who were all standing around. Their story is as follows: 1 "Capt. Wannamaker was standing { 1 -11- /VAVV+Iarrtmi if) ^ Willi jscvci ai gcuucwvu in front of East's store, and he said ( that false reports were being circu- [ lated about the Tolbert matter. Ee J was standing with his back to the < door and Herlong came across the * street. The Captain walked out ' toward Herlong. He met him and ' told him that he had reported that " _ rifles were carried to the Alliance J . meeting to break it up. Herlong ; said he saw one at the meeting. y Capt, "Wannamaker started to explain why the rifle was there, but res?dering he told Herlong that he < ffiWlttTliffiifllTii in 1W\ia *w>IrAt and said that anv one who-f! said he toid a lie was a liar. The"" j Captain saw the knife and asked Herlong if he had drawn it to cut him with. Herlong told him that < he hod better not touch him, Captain ! Wannamaker drew a pen knife from his pocket, but after opening it closed i it again, and told Herlong that he had told him he was a liar, and if any touching was to be done he was the one to do the touching. Mr. Winges here said: "Come on, Cap- 1 tain, you've said enough; let's take a : drink.'' Captair TY&nnam&ker, Mr. Winges, Mr. Trezevant and others walked off. Herlong followed. Captain Wannamaker went about twenty yards before be noticed Herlong following. He then turned and said: "'You are following me up to cut me;" then Herlong rushed to ward Captain Wannamaker and cut him, Captain Wannamaker striking at Herlong at the same time with his fist, the blow and the cut being about simultaneous. At this moment a pistol was handed Capt. Wannamaker by a friend, but he said: "No; I am not cut badly, and I do not wish to shoot him," and thereupon turning off started to fall, but he was caught by several of those present and carried to Yveatherhorn's store. In the meantime several men were I holding Herlong, having pulled him off as soon as he made the cut. In reply to a question by one of the jurors, one of the witnesses said that when Captain Wannamaker asked Herlong if he was following him up to cut him, Herlong replied, "Yes." The funeral of Captain Wannamaker took place at St. Matthews at 10 o'clock Friday morning. For rheumatic and neuralgic pains, rub in Dr. J. H. McLean's Volcanic 011 Liniment, and take Dr. J. H. An Augusta boy who had committed some misdemeanor was about to receive chastisement at the hands of bis mother. He asked her to go to his room. The mother assented, curious as to his errand followed and listened at the door. She heard her ' son praying inside. Here is the meat of the reply of the Omaha World Herald to the question: "What ails the farmers ?" "With a rate of interest amounting to as much as the rental of a farm, exorbitant transportation charges to a market, where he is put into competition with pauper labor and cheap American made machinery, and with double prices charged him for everything he and his family eats or uses or wears, the answer to the question is not far to seek. The Columbia thermometer of hope of securing the Southbound railroad was raised many degrees by the pubj lication in the Record yesterday after J noon of the pusposes of the visit of ! Mr. John F. Willis, the light of way | purchasing agent of the road. The matter was read witli interest throughout the city, and our business men now realize that with a little united effort the road can be secured. Yesterday Mr. "Willis visited the line as surveyed through Lexington county and spent the whole day in seeing about the rights of way along the routs. He returned to the city I just in time to catch the Charleston I train. From a prominent railroad man j with whom he talked before leaving ' it was learned that he was going D O I ejther to Charleston or to the headi quaters of the company in Savannah to render his report as to the rights of way he has already seen about, including his work in Lexington yesterday. He stated that as soon as lie had made out an submitted his report he would return to Columbia in about a week to complete his work in Lexington. This indicates that the road means business at this end of the line, and something should now be done by ! our business men to increase the in | ducements from this city.
