Hj Br wujjuw . j ?aa it " jw ?hc Lexington dispatch. WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 2I?, 18?J. ' * I - C. S. BRADFORD, - - Editor. 0. M. HARM AN, * - Assistant Editor. The publication of the report of the ] County Commissioners takes up much of j our space this week, but we presume most of our readers will be pleased to see how the taxes have been disbursed. Don't buy a thermometer now. They j will be lower scon. The present Legislature will elect a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, j They cannot find a better man for the position than Judge Pressley. From a hasty perusal of the Governor's j Message, we see that it is replete with ! interesting matter and valuable sngges- i tions, which if carried out, will inangu-| rate an era of business and financial pros-! perity which the State has not felt for j many years. The Legislature met yesterday. The ; House convened at 12 o'clock, Speaker ! Sheppard^in the chair. The calling of J the roll showed but two absentees. The j Speaker expressed the hope that harmony j and unity of action would characterize! the session. The purpose of all should ! be to accomplish the greatest ainouDt of work in the least possible time, and at the least possible exppnse The Senate met at 12 M. Governor's Message received and read. Several bills and resolutions were offered, and will come up for consideration to-day. Dr. E. S. J. Hayes, W.- M.'. Lexington Lodge, No. 152 A.-. F.\ M.\ is in receipt of a letter from Charles Inglesby, Secretary Grand Lodge, informing him that ? > : ?A A i lie lias succeeueu iu procuring icuutcu j rates over the South Carolina aud the | Greenville and Columbia Railroads to Charleston on the 7tb. 8th and 9th December, good to return until the loth December inclusive. Round trip tickets from Columbia $2.50. These rates will j not be confined to the Masonic fraternity ! attending the session of the Grand Lodge I but will be given to all persons wishing j to visit Charleston on above dates. The Bridge Meeting. The committee of eleven on the crossings of the rivers between Lexiugton and - Columbia held their meeting Saturday in the City Council Chamber. The sub-committee submitted their report, showing the revised rate of toll over Columbia Bridge, heretofore published. A letter was received by the subcommittee from W. G. Childs, Secretary Columbia Bridge Company, declining to make any further reduction in the tolls over that bridge. Dr. Muller then introduced the following preamble aud resolutions, which were adopted: "Whereas, the reductions which have been made by the Columbia Bridge Cotnpany cfo norrelieve the citizens of Lexiuglou and Columbia of the high rates of toll imposed upon them; therefore, resolved. 1st. That a sub-committee be appointed, consisting of the chairman of this! committee aud two others, to be appoint-1 ed by the Chair, whose duty it shall be to : ascertain whether the Kinsler charter of' a ferry near the Columbia Bridge is sti'l j of force, and whether it can be transferred ; aud made use of by other parties; also, j that said committee devise a plan for the j re-establishment of a ferry at that place j [Committee?H. A. Meetze, tx officio j Chairman, J. C. Haskell, Dr. G. Mniler.] 2d. That a sub-comiuittee of three be j appointed in the city of Columbia to ob-1 taiu subscriptions of money or stock for ' the re-establish men t of a ferry near the! Columbia Bridge. [Committee?John j E Bacon, John C. Haskel and John C.; Dial.] i 3d. That a sub-committee of five be i appointed in Lexington County to obtain 1 subscriptions of mony or stock for the re- j establishment of a ferry uear the Colum- j bia Bridge. [Committee?H. A. Meetze, { G. Mniler, Levi Gunter, Simon I. Hook i aud S. T. Lorick.] 4tb. That a sub committee of three be appointed to present a petition to the I Connty Commissioners of Lexington, i asking them to re-onen the road leading r* A. O ; from Kiusler's Ferry to the old State ; Road as it was when the said fern- was 1 in operation. [Committee?H. A.! Meetze. G. Leaphart and G. Muller.] | 5th. That these several committees report to this general committee, at a meet- j iug to be held at Columbia on the second ' Msuday in January, 1880, at 11 o'clock ! ? -?r A. Ui.. f Dots from Saluda. Weather very cold for some days.; Four inches of snow fell on the 19th. Sowing of small grain delayed by | frozen ground. A much larger area is; being planted in oats and wheat than in former years. One our farmers has sown 100 bushels of oats. This is true economy, as they are better fur stock than corn and fod 'er and raised with much less labor and expense. Potato crop short owtiig to dry fall Our cotton crops yielded heavier thau anticipated aud nearly all sold. Diphtheria h sheen quite prevalent but under the hands of that skillful physician Dr. J. W. Eargle but few cases proved fatal. Mr. J. 13. Hiller is running an extensive tannery. His leather took three premiums at the late State Fair. He should advertise in the Disjxit' h. I notice several new j dwelliugs in course of erection, which is encouraging and denotes a return of prosperity. A large debating society has been organized at Mr. J. J. Wessinger's . store. It meets every Friday. Subject for next Friday, "which affords man the most happiness, a married or single life?" Ladies are invi'ed to attend as a lively HjBt debate is expected. The Jhspa'rh is gaining ground this community and ^HBH^^feeople are becoming convinced that HB9^B||^^Court Hou.se paper is the last one to ^SHRBBQALmoney for. 13. COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ANNUAL REPORT.
