Crop Conditions.
i Lancaster cor. The News aud
Courier, 23rd iust. : Some crops
in this vicinity, as well as in
other portious of the county
where there was little or no rainfall
last week, when other sections
were blessed with fine seasons,
are being seriously affected
bv the dry weather.
Cotton is about thp only crop
that is uoi suffering. Gardens
are failing rapidly, and old corn
looks like it is "done for."?
Mr. \V. J. Cunningham, one of
the most prominent and succesfful
farmers in the couuty, remerked
yesterday that he has
a 30-acre fiold of old corn, uow
in the tasselling sta'e, which,
judging from presout appearances,
will not tnuko a bushel to
tho acre. He is having peas
sown broadcast over the field.
Mr R. W. Harper and other
leading farmers also give distressing
accounts of the condi
tion of the early plauted corn.
County Supervisor ^Gardner
who 1)as spout all the week traveling
in the county reports tho
situ ation as really serious.
The poor condition of the corn
crop is not altogether due to the
luck of seasons, but is the ravages
of worms as well,
j Apropos of worms in corn Mr.
Wilson Sis*are, a model farmer
of tho Riverside section, has a
novel way of checking the dam
age wrought by the little pests.
His plan is to sprinkle a few
grains of sand in the top of
every stalk. He says he has
: tried the remedy with absolute
success in every instance.
Though small for the time of
the year, tho cotton plant con,
tinues to grow and is apparent*
ly notl much hurt by the
I drought.
