?t?orfirt? ?Vdrcdisrr. Celebration of Lee's Birthday. As has been their custom for a number of years, the members of the Edgefield chapter, U. D. C., will hold appropriate exercises on the afternoon of January 19th in commemoration of the birthday of Gen. Robert E. Lee. The address will be delivered by Dr. M. D. Jef fries. The exercises will be held in the Baptist church. An inter esting program is being arranged for the occasion. Officers Elected. Tuesdsy night Butler lodge, I. O. O. F., elected the following offi cers to serve for the ensuing six months: Rev. R. G. Shannonhcuse, noble grand; Rev. P. P. Blalock, vice errand; J. S. Byrd, warden; W. H. Bee. outer guardian; R. L. Dunovant, secretary and treasurer. The appointive officers will be an nounced later. It was decided last night, to hold the annual oyster sup per Tuesday night, January 23rd. Mr. Cheatham's Auction Sale. Those who are needing house hold goods, farming implements, farm produce, cattle, etc., should bear in mind the auction sale that | Mr. S. Cheatham is to conduct at his residence on Tuesday, January 30th* As Mr. Cheatham has pur chased a farm in Georgia and will soon move there to reside perma nently he will sell practically all of his personal property to save the trouble and expense of moving it. A complete list of the property to be sold will be found in his adver tisement in this issue. Annuual Fraternal Feasts. At this season of the year the lodges of the town hold their an nual feasts. After the installation of the officers on Tuesday evening of last week the Knights of Pythi as enjoyed their annual oyster sup per. Thursday evening last the Wood men, a rapidly growing order, held their feast after the annual installa tion exercises. Appropriate short speeches were made by Mr. C. M. Mellichamp. Capt. John R. Block er, Hon. B. E. Nicholson, Hon. S. McG. Sim ki ns and Hon. M. P. IveUa. --- Week of Prayer. The missionary society of the ? Baptist church will observe the week of prayer, beginning Tuesday afternoon, January 16th, at 3:30 o'clock, ""he subject will be Pagan Fields, Mrs. J. W. Peak, leader. Wednesday afternoon will be de voted to mission work in Italy, Mexico and South America, con-) ?ducted by Mrs. W. E. Lott, The Silver Sunbeam Jubilee ex ercises will be given by Edgefield Sunbeams on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. M. D. Jeffries has arranged an interesting program on "The Baptist world" for the meeting on Friday. The Christmas offering en velopes will be collected at that time. Jeffries will hold a series of special services at the Baptist church. He will do the preaching and the music will be conducted by Mr. M. J. Babbitt, a gospel singer from Atlanta. The time for holding the services and other details will be announced later. School Claims to be Paid County ' Treasurer J. T. Mims informed The Advertiser's repre sentative Monday that as soon as the matter can be brought before the legislature by the members of the Edgefield delegation provision will be made for paying the out standing school claims at once. The holders of these claims should read a notice published by Superintend ent of Education W. W. Fuller in this issue. Mr. Floyd's Cannery. The writer is indebted to Mr. Wiley Floyd of Red Hill for sever al large cans of delightful beans and peaches, the product of his home cannery. Mr. Floyd is planning to put about 15,000 cans of?fruit and vegetables on the market next sum mer. The output of his cannery for the 1911 season sold readity at good prices. In fact, Mr. Floyd was unable to supply the the demand. He gives full measure and u^es only fruit and vegetables of the best quality. Death of Mrs. Nicholson. Early Friday morning last Mrs. Nicholson, the wife of Dr. Walter Nicholson, passed peacefully away after a tedious illness that lasted i through many months. Before her ! marriage Mrs. Nicholson was Miss Butler, a daughter of the late Mr. William Butler, being a descendant of one of the oldest and most cul tured Edgefield families. Although a great sufferer during her long ill ness, Mrs. Nicholson exercised pa tience and fortitude that come only through reliance upon a higher source. Always gentle, thoughtful, kind and self-sacrificing, this good lady will be greatly miss?d in the home and by her friends. The interment took place in the Nicholson cemetery Saturday morn ing, a short service being conduct ed at the grave. Mrs. Nicholson is survived by her husband, one daugh ter, Miss Lou Nicholson, and one son, Mr. Walter L. Nicholson. Death of Mr. Robert H. Covar. Mr. Covar's Edgefield friends were saddened by the intelligence of his death which occurred at his home in Augusta Wednesday after noon last. He was born here and made Edgefield his home until about 10 years ago. Mr. Covai was an excellent printer and for a number of years was The Adverti ser's foreman. The following no tice of his death appeared in the Augusta Herald: "Mr. Robert H. Covar, a well known printer of this city, died at his residence on Glover street at 4:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, after a lingering illness. The funeral services will be held from the Woodlawn Methodist church at 3:30 o'clock Fri^av after noon. Rev. A. D. Ech?la and Rev. G. F. Venable officiating. The in terment will be in the city cemetery. Mr. Covar was a popular mem ber of Social Lodge, F. and A. M.; Woodlawn Lodge No. 29, Jr. O. U. A. M., and Typographical Union No. 41. Each of these lodges will be represented at tho funeral and burial services and the rites of each order will be observed. Deceased was born in April of 1870 in Edgefield, S. C. He had lived in Augusta for some time and was one of the best printers in the city. He was a prominent lodge man and had friends everywhere. He is survived by his wife, who was, Miss Jennie E. Hendrix be fore her marriage to Mr. Covar in '96, and two daughters and one son. His sad deat!h was a shock to the entiie community. Old Soldier Tortured.
