Israel Mukashy, Bargain, House. TRIP TO BALTIMORE (Continued from page l|) i ; ; the shadow, as it were, of one of the greatest seats of learning: in our south land. We saw nothing that reminded us of a school or a church in the country districts. Perhaps they have them "back off fr$m the railroad." Charlettsville. The seat of the university vf Vir ginia is about 100 miles south west of Washington. We saw the'build ings in the distance, but nothing of the town. This is the most pictur esque section of the route. We are first on one side and then on anoth er of the mountains or immense hills. The autumn color of the leaves of the small trees, and the streams, and the red apples clinging on the trees aie beautiful. There are small houses under the hills and little patches between the foot hills and the streams, and we suspect blind tiger stills by the dozens finest place in the world for them. Orange, \Ca\pepper, Calverton, Manassas and Alexandria were the most important stops made before reaching Washington. We crossed the Rapidan, the Rapahannook and Bull Run. This embraces a section of country of about 80 miles and is decidedly the best we saw in Vir ginia. There is quite a good deal of hill land all along but of a better quality. There is a good deal of loamy land, also red sandy land. The farm houses and the surround ings are much better. Guess our coach must have gqtton "back off from the railroads." There is more grain sowed, more stock and some barns and other outbuildings." All this section of the state is historic ground. There is perhaps now little or no evidence of the great straggle of the sixties. The bones that once bleached the landscape have disap peared as mother earth absorbed the life blood of the flower of the south. The destruction of life was perhaps greater in Virginia than any other state. The battles of Cedar Moun tain, Beverly Ford, Brandy, Gains ville, Bull Run 'and Fairfax were all fought not far from tKe line of ' the Southern. Space forbids us from attempting to give even the minut est detail of any of these famous battles. We may say, however, in passing that it was at Brandy sta tion July '63 that Col. Frank Hampton (brother of our Wade Hampton) fell mortally wounded; and it was here that CJapt -3?ar}ey was killed by the same shell that cut off Gen. Butler's foot and kill ed his horse under him. Alexandria Is a quaint old town on the Po tomac river and was the first capital of Virginia. It hasn't grown a foot in an hundred years. The people here pride themselves in being an cient and like to tell you of the old church Washington worshipped in and of "the old Masonic lodge and of the Marshall house on which floated a Confederate flag that was obnoxious to President Lincoln. One Col. Ellsworth of the United States army ascended the roof in tho night time and hauled down the colors which were so displeasing to the President but exchanged his life for the deed. Washington We will leave for a more oppor tune time to write. "We are tired now and sleepy too." Our Southern 1,000 mile ticket don't go on the Pennsylvania railroad. It's out with your chinck or walk. But the darkie comes in here. It's all nigger after you pass Washington. They step on your toes and fall down in your lap while the northerners cuss the rail road* and the government for not having separate cars. Between Washington and Balti more I 'never saw a single house being built at any of the towns. And you will be . surprised to know there isn't but one chicken between the two places a distance of 40 miles-one old domineck hen. No doubt the old rooster is dead or got a divorce. _W. D.
