"I Can't Sing." How many young and old make this answer when urged to accept a song book and join in the singing! I know a gentleman who says he could not recognize "Jesus Lover of my soul" or 'Nearer my God to thee" if he were to hear the tunes without the words, ? so wholly un able is he to distinguish one tune from another. But you would never know this from his attitude during the church song service. He pro cures a song book, turns to the number and from all outward ap pearance is singing. What he really is doing is just reading the words over and trying to get Ihe tune, al though he says as far as he knows, he has never succeeded in getting it. You Avho "can't sing:" adopt this method; it might turn out that you will be more successful in catching the tune than the gentleman above. You may not be able to sing well or even moderately well, but, at least, you can say the words over. Perhaps you are not.a Mrs. Rohrer, but it would never do to give a hun gry husband the excuse "I can't cook" (if the cook leaves between meals) when he returns from his day's work. It would be safer to have the stove hot and you be going through the motion of cooking. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA. SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION.
