At the recent session of the legis lature, the hymn "Carolina," com posed by Timrod, was adopted as the State hymn. The music was composed by the lamented Miss Burgess, a sister of Rev. T. P. Burgess. The following is a brief sketch of the beautiful life of this very talented lady: Miss Anne Custiss Burgess died in October, 1910, about four months before the event for which she had fondly hoped. Her life was une ventful, and very happy, rich in friendships and love. Delicate from her birth she was always the darling of her family. She was born in Mayesville in Sumter county, the third daughter of Dr? Thomas L. Burgess and Mrs. Frances Mayes Burgess. Of the five sons and three daughers of her parents, she alone has joined them on the shining shore. While she was yet i child her family removed to Summerton and that place was "home" to her till the time of her death, though she left it long: years to studir or to fol low her profession elsewhere. What was mortal of her was laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery of that place on the 10th day of October, 1910. Her aptitude for music and song early manifested itself and after preliminary study in the school of her home town and in " lemminger School at Charleston she entered Converse college. There for five years she worked faithfully and in 1910 received her diploma in the department of music. At the time of her graduation recital Dr. Peters spoke with appreciation, rather with enthusiasm, of the quality of her work. It is hardly to be doubted that her fragile body prevented her from attaining to lofty heights in her chosen profession. After completing the course at Converse, Miss Burgess spent a year in private study under a very able teacher in Hagerstown, Md., Mrs. E. E. Ayers. Her Life Work Soon Finished. Could her family, her intimate friends, and her physicians have prevailed against her determination she would not have taxed her slight strength by teaching; but she was insistent on using the talents she had cultivated and doing her part of the world's work. At different times she taught classes in music in Summerton, Williamston, Winthrop college, and the Thomwell orphan age schools in Clinton. She was just entering upon her third session at Thornwell when her final illness seized her. For six weeks she suf fered greatly and all efforts to re lieve her failed. As a final resort she was carried to a hospital in Sum ter where she was under the care of a friend of her lamented father. A critical surgical operation failed to check her disease and it became thc sad task of those who loved her to tell her she must leave them*. She had insisted that she be told and received the announcement with en tire resignation. But many times during her illness she said, "I don't want to die yet. I'm willing if God calls me, and I'm not afraid; but there is so much I want to do on earth yet." A Characterization. She was by nature deeply religi ous and she shrank with horror from the speculative or doubting na ture. All her life she walked like a little child under the protection of a personal God and Savior. She heated evil, and actual con i Ferti . First Priz< ^irst prize for ^irst prize for |*irst prize for 1,000 bushell ? A critic once made the obser vation of .Ralph Waldo Emerson that he was. incapable of sin in the or dinary sense, it had no attraction for him. Such was the case with Miss Anne Burgess. She was keenly sus ceptible to the words and feelings of those about her. Her sensitive ness to slight impressions, her raj> turous enthusiasms, her eagerness for sympathy and understanding, all these were but the revealing traits of an artistic temperament. Music seemed to have the power of throwing her into an ecstacy of feeling. She loved to play and sing for those she trusted to under stand music, but it was hard for lici to cast her pearls before swine, and she refused generally to play for those who did not manifest sincere love for music. A Musician and a Poet. Besides "Carolina" this sweet musician left several uncompleted fragments of her own musical com position. Her friends greatly ad mired her musical setting of Tenny son's "'Crossing the Bar." After her death, in December, 1910, the "Christian Observer" published two poems writtenbyher in 1909. Both are dainty spiritual little compositions and afford the reader a glimpse into the soul of the writer. It is vain to speculate on might have-beens, yet the world will do it; and such speculations can not be checked when one contemplates the catting down so early of a life sc full of promise. I was greatly impressed with Cooper's theory that the stomach is responsible for a ma jority of ailments, rheumatism in cluded. He claimed that stomach weakness, bad digestion and poor appetite impoverished the system and made it an easy prey to disease; of all kinds, and that if the stomacl was restored to normal condition of health and" strength, bodily ilh would disappear. "Next day I sent for a treatment of Cooper's New Discovery and be gan taking it. The rapid manner in which it corrected my trouble was a revelation to me, and beat anything I ever heard of. In two weeks' time I was feeling so good that I return ed to work and have lost no time since on account of illness. The rheumatism finally left me entirely, and my general health is decidedly better than it has been in years." Rheumatism is a result of impure blood, the primary cause of which is a bad stomach.
