Griffis told the writer on Saturday thai; Turkey creek was higher on Friday last than it has been in twenty-one years. Messrs. Rives Bros. have en gaged Mr. J. M. Cobb to take charge of their shoe department for the fall season. Miss Wilmouth Jackson, of York county, is teaching the Waycross school this session, and is boarding at the home of Mr. P. F. Ryan. .As a result of the very heavy rains last week a quantity of corn on creeks and branches was con siderably damaged. Some was de stroyed entirely. Judge A. C. Ouzts of Elmwood has been made happy by the new ar rival in his home. As soon as the scientific world settles the Peary Cook controversy he will be given a name. ' The ladies who were appointed by the County Fair association to take charge of the floral parade are * requested to meet at the home of of Mrs. J. D. Holstein Monday af ternoon at 4:30 o'clock. .Tust received another large ship ment of Cortwright metal shingles, will last a life-time. Stewart & Kernaghan Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Johnston are receiving the congratulations of their friends over the arrival of a beautiful little ^daughter, Mary Elizabeth, who is now a per mapent visitor at their home. The Advertiser's representative, Mr. C. M. Mellrcharap, was very favorably impressed with his visit to Plum Branch last week. The peo ple are wide-awake and aggressive, and the town affords an excellent seed and cotton market for the sur ro anding country. Rev. A. C. Wilkins, the pastor of th? Baptist church at Abbeville, has been spending his vacation down in Beaufort county, and stopped over with his friend, Mir. L. F. Dorn, at Purkaville, Friday while en route to his borne. Mr. Heckle at the parsonage. Earl is a bright, handsome boy and the oldest child of Mr. J. H. Cogburn, who lives near Elmwood. Miss Carrie is a beautiful and intel ligent daughter of Mr. James Bry ant of the Good Hope section. "Why do so many women rest their chins on their hands when they are trying to think?" Cogburn Saturday afternoon at 4;30 o'clock. Considering the very heavy rain fall of Thursday last, amounting almost to a cloudburst, the taxpay ers were exceedingly fortunate in having only two bridges washed away in the county. One was across Stevens creek on the Long Cane road and the other was acrosrt the same creek on the Ninety Six road. While the yield of cotton will not be what it promised at one time, vet it is a fact that with the staple selling for upwards of twelve cents farmers will realize a handsome sum for tbeir crop. Some days ago Mr. W. D. Holland told us that he re ceived a check for 8137.52 for two bales of cotton, and estimating the seed at 818 would make the total receipts ?155.52. Farmers wear broad smiles when they recc've such returns. . Miss Madge Mays has gone to teach at Ulmer, S. C., Miss Eileen Ouzts, ' will teach the Flatrock school; Miss Louise Lyon will leach near Wards; Miss May Roper has been engaged as assistant teacher of the Plum Branch; school Miss Daisy Lyon will teach near Ridge Spring; Miss Mattie Lyon will teach at Williston and Miss Mattie Mi ms will teach in the Edgefield Graded School.
