EDGEFIELD ADVERTISER ..- Established 1835. J. h., HIMS EDITOR ' TERMS: ONE YEAR ----- $1.50 SIX MONTHS - - - - .75 WEDNESDA?, JU2TE 9, 1909. The Chines e have a s ay ia g that an unlucky word drop ped irom the tongue, can not be brought back again by a coads and six hors?a.-GOLD SMITH. It's all right to kick and cuff a . cur, but beware of the petted and pampered canine. The decalogue says nothing about coveting a.; fellow's big, handsome touring car. If it did we'd all be in a had plight. A. convention of "lied Shirts," the men who aided Hampton in driving out'the scallawags and carpet bag gers in 1876, has been called to meet at Anderson on June 24th. A num ber of Edgefield men should have a prominent place in the picture. ' Barnwell county is advertising for bids for the erection of a new jail. They should have waited until after the election on the 17th of Au gust. If the dispensary is voted out, the old jail would easily supply the demand. > "A rolling stone gathers no moss/' but. not so with a Ball, especial ly "Billy" Ball of the News and Courier. In spite of his wayfaring or itinerant proclivities, he con stantly gathers friends, prestige and let us hope, golden shekels about bim. \ Greenwood has extended an in vitation to the Citadel cadets to hold their encampment next year within its borders. Edgefield. must issue a like invitation not many years hence.' One of the essentials to a successful encampment is a hundred or more pretty girls, and it will not be many years before Edgefield can furnish a sweetheart for each cadet. President Barrett of the Nations Farmers Union has called a me ing in Atlanta on June, 24th to coi sider the matter of marketing the 1909 cotton crop. We fear that not a great deal can, he accomplished. Had this year's acreage been reduc ed thirty per cent, instead of about three per cent, the marketing prob lem could he easily solved. Let an individual com ai it ninety and nine ?rood deeds, and a large portion of the world takes no cog nizance of them-^-never stop to say v "Well done." On the other hand, let the one hundredth deed be ques tionable, not positively bad, and anathemas are showered upon him." Such was the experience of Rev. Mri Kennedy who recently pitched a.dog from a church window in Columbia. Much car . be said by way of ex tenuation for the Mobile young man who is under indictment foi s wearing falsely in order torobtain a marriage license.-A plea of Saving committed the offenses white intoxi cated-- intojicate?l with love-^would be a strong argument beforevaJury. Who could cast the first stone at the young iellow?' Where-: is th? man or woman who has not made false statement; about their lovf affairs? Two telling factors- in ..'the build ;. ing of good roads are rural free delivery 'mad routes and automo biles. The national government re fuses to establibh mail routes unless the roads to- be travelled by the carriers are in a reasonably good condition. This alone has caused very marked improvement of thc condition o.i the public roads in many parts of the state. A more general use of automobiles'for cross country trips is also Lading to im provement in the public highways Owners of machines are agitating road improvement with very grati fying results in many places. Estimated Cost of Plant. The Advertiser stated last weel tb at a representative of an electrh supply company had recently mad< an inspection of the town of Edge field for the purpose of estimating the cost of an electric light plant Within the last few days we ha v received a copy of the prospecta made by. this gentleman, and th| . figur?s given are very encouraging It is estimated that a 105-horse power electric light plant installs ' ready for operation wr?l cost $11, ' 425; The expense of operating th plant has bean placed at S3,795,00, per annum while the total income has, been estimated at $5,928. Thus it is shown that the net profit after deducting ail operating expenses would be $2,123, or about 20 per cent dividend on the amount invest ed. This estimate made by a repre sentative of the General Eleotric Company, which is one of the f ore^ most electric supply houses in the country, is, so far as the writer's information extends, the first esti mate of the cost of a plant that has ever been made by an expert, and for that reason should receive the careful consideration of our citizens. All will agree that the town needs better lighting facilities. Now, what shall we do with the prospectus and preliminary work dope by the representative of this large and thoroughly reliable company? We believe that, sufficient capital for installing the plant can be raised in Edgefield^ if the. proper person or persons will take the initiative. Kentucky's Bad Case. Prohibition in Kentucky means ruin; it means destruction; in Louis ville, it means the end of all our hopes as a city, and also our aspira tions as free men and free women'. - Marse Henry. If the case is so tad as that, Colo nel,' perhaps Kentucky had better just go bust, and have a receiver, and take a fresh start. We think very small potatoes of prohibition; don't like it; don't be lieve in it. But if the prosperity of a State is absolutely dependent on the rum business, that State is in a bad case. Perhaps if . Kentucky, through whatever tribulations, can earn to lean less on whisky, tobac co, and race horses it will be a gainer in the end through conse quent progress in the amenities of civilization. While its people are great people, and itu human mate rial is unsurpassed^ its politics are a disgrace and its society exceptionally charged with disorder and defiance of Jaw. Isn't the State overstimulated, Colonel? If prohibition rages and threatens to overwhelm it, is it not the blind struggle of disease to find a remedy? If prohibition is to ruin Kentucky, let her bust! For generations she has traded to her pecuniary profit on the vices-or say the indulgences of mankind. Perhaps it is partly a consequence of that trade that she is so ungovernable. Let her raise more hemp awhile, and less whis key^-Harper's Weekly. Many persons in Edgefield were deeply saddened by. the announce ment of the death of Mrs. Cofield which occurred at her home in Spar tanburg Friday morning, June 4th. The interment took place the fol lowing day at Clark's Hill. Mrs. Cofield was the eldest daugh ter of Dr. and Mrs. G. \A. Bunch, and a granddaughter of the late George Dy Tillman. She is survived by her husband and one little child. Mrs. Cofield is better known in Edgefield by her maiden name, Miss Margaret Bunch. By her gen tle manners, amiable disposition, and attractive, magnetic personali ty, she made many friends in our -town while a student at the South Carolina Co-Educational Institute. Several years ago. Mrs. Cofield united with the church and has since^been a deeply pious, consecra ted young woman, actively identi fied with the work of her church. When "death broke the vital chain and freed her soul" she entered upon that eternal rest prepared for His saints. ^ insurance Blunders. "Sir, I am sorry to see you in a situation which is a disgrace to yourself and family and the profession te which you be long."-This reproof elicited the fol lowing colloquy: "Did your honor speak to me?^ "I did, sir. I said, sir, that in my opinion you dis graced yourself and family, the court, and the profession by your course of conduct." "May i-i-it please your honor, I have been an attorney in-in-in this c-court for fifteen years and, permit me to say, your honor, that this is the first correct opinion I ever knew, you to give." Very Serious Damage While in town Saturday Capt. I J. H. Bouknight told the The Ad vertiser's representative that the' recent hail and wind destroyed all of his grain and 150 acres of cotton. The grain was beaten out as if by a thresher. ' What he cuts will be simply to get the straw. As soon as the ground i s dry enough he will start half a dozen or morel planters to replant his cotton. Capt. Bouknight thought at first that his corn was hopelessly damaged and that it would also have to be plowed up, but it is' recuperating rapidly. Mr. W.
