I take this means of notifying tl public that my black horse, Moni Carlo, will stand the season at Pw ell's shop to the, rear of the cou: house. As he has been befor? ti Edgefield public three years his qua ities are well known. I will give a Frazier road cart 1 the owner of the best colt exhibit* at the County Fair sired by Mon Carlo. Another cart will be awar ed as a prize at the Fair of 1910. This means that a Frasier ca will be awarded every fall.. J, E, Mncs. GOV. GLENN'S ADDRESS. .? ' f - *. I (Con tinned ;froxa;.first page.) Blind tigers aie easily. discossJed. It is-only necessary to watch where the "old soaks" go when they ssek' their haunts. Catch the drunken men and make them tell where they got it. Prohibition prohibits where the officials do their duty. That is how it was made effective in North Car olina. With relation to the taxes, Gov. Glenn said that last year we spent $8,644,214 in payment of our liquor biH-a per capita tax of $2.74; ?md we made $934,000 profit out of it which amounted to a per capita re duction in taxes of 61 cents. The speaker then asked if any peison were willing tc -barter the rish of his boy's or his daughter's future against a few cents of tax. In Chicago the tax on the traffic produced a revenue of $50, 000,000: but to take care of-the results of the traffic in the crime produced the cost $52,000,000. And this does not consider the misery brought and the destruction of bodies and souls ' of victims. The figures quoted by the govern or were appalling as they relate to the conditions growing out of the traffic in this country. The vice mill is the only kind of mill that destorys what goes though it. Why not destroy this mill? Fifty per cent, of all the fallen wo men started oh the downward road by strong drink: 90 per cent ol' the ruined men started through vice pro moted by liquor. ' This curse breeds insanity, pover ty, cruelty, death. The drunkard is unkind to those who love him. Then how can you, by your vote, by your influence, ask your citizens to [keep this curse here. This is the capital'of the greatest State in the Upion and in_ August it will rid itself of the curse. They say it helps business. Yon drink up$l and there" goes a meal; you drink up $4 and there goes a coat; you drink up $2.50 and there goes a pair of pants, but I ara' go ing no further. (Laughter.) You can't put whiskey into your stom ach and attend to business. You can't put whiskey into your stomach and make your wife and children happy. When district attorney of North Carolina in 1893 to 1897, Gaston county had been an eye-sore to him. There were 38 distilleries, many blockade distilleries, innumerable blind tigers and saloons and only two cotton mills and scarcely a de cent school house. The people got together, voted out liquor and wday they have good schools, 43 large mills, employing 10,000 people, and a county fille/d with good roads, good schools, churches, peace and good will. j Eight years ago Mecklenberg County had declared her indepen dence, greater than the declaration of 1775, and today this is one of the grandest counties in the State. Is it opportune? That's the ques tion to be met. God only requires us to do our duty.' The legislature says you must vote. Then vote( right. God will take care cf the consequences. The wettest dry town is lOO times drier than s. wide1 open town. Is it opportune? Would the peo ple of Columbia weigh a matter of Ja small per capita, tax againut the honor and purity of their women, the manhood of their boys? You got $131,000 in Richland, bu t that is offset by the added cost of crime,, the loss time, the loss of virtue^ the loss of manhood. His class peroration was a beauti ful piece of oratory and it may) be said conservatively that the ox-gov ernor received quite an ovation. The meeting was presided over by Dr. E. G. Quattlebaum, who in introducing Gov. Grlenn, declared that he is sure bf victory in August. The inspiring singing was lied by Mr. Fl F. Whildren. Horse-Shoeing.
