EDGEFIELD ADVERTISER Established 1835. ! V R Si S VK Y ps); M 5(1 .75 Wtf?NESDA y. JAN. SO, 1309. Men are so constituted. tha^ ?very one undertakes what he g sees- another successful in, li] wixether he has aptitude for it ! J Largely Sign ed Petitions Through the efforts of the-me m i hers of the Woman's Christian Tem perance Union, petitions for state wide prohibition have been circu . lated in every section of the county, and on yesterday they were forward ed to .Columbia. In the aggregate, the petitions contained between one thousand and eleven hundred names, not including two or three petitions yet to be sent in. This is by con siderable odds a: majority of the voters in the county, and indicates what the. predominating sentiment - is upon this issue. There were hun dreds of voters , who could not be seen during'the short time, that the petitions were .circulated. - Cammitt?e Assignments, Much Work to Jae Done. Mr.Sim, krcs'Bill. ' ^The legislature has been in ses sion one week, and, as the first few days arV always consumed in or ganization, 'appointment of commit tees and other' preleminary jjork, veryjittlu lias been done up to this time. The House adjourned from Saturday until to-day. yesterday being a holiday-General Lee's birthday. The senate declined to adjourn- and has b?en steadily at work. The committee- assignments of . Edgefield's delegation are as fol laws: Senator R?insford will serve on the following committees: Agricul tural, Enrolled Bills, Engrossed Bills, Incorporations, Medical af fairs and Public Lands. Mr. Simkins will serve on the following House committees: Judi ciary, Hospital for Insane, Offices and Officers. ' Mr. Wells received the following assignments on House committees: Education, Federal Relations, Fish, (jame and Forrestry. The several vacancies that are to he filled will consume considerable itiine, the most important being the election of a Chief Justice and an Associate Justice. Either Associate Justice J?nes or Gary wilhbe elect ;.ed Chief Justice, and prominently mention for Associate Justice are Circuit Judges Watts, Hydriek and Gage, Representatives Cothran and Hon. Jl C. Sheppard. Some difficult problems to be solved this session are the repeal of the lien law, the liquor question, a change in the assessment of proper ty for taxation, etc. More than t?vo weeks were consumed %s t session \ upon the lien law and the discus sion of prohibition without the ac complishment of anything. Such should not be the case this year. Mr. Simkins has introduced a bill providing for .an extension of the term . of the , County ? superin tendent of education and county ' supervisor from two to four years. This should become a law. The fact is, it would' better if all of the officers were elected for four years, doing away with the frequent hold ing of elections. Furthermore, it^ quires one term of two years for an official to become thoroughly fa miliar with the duties of the office. ; -i--X . ' ?, . Will Compete For The Adverti ser's Prize*,. Mr. William Toney of Johnston, .was in Edgefield. on Monday and, while in conversation with the writer, said the man who wins The Advertiser's first prize next fall will have to grow some fine corn. He .will soon measure off his acre and begin the preparation. Mr. Toney says no farmer in one section of the county-has the advantage of far ' mers in other sections because of the supposed superior character of the soil. He says, and we believe he is right, the yield will depend upon the preparation, fertilization and manner of cultivation. An acre f of0 average land anywhere in the bounty : properly prepared, properly (.fertilized and properly oultivated ,;can be made to produce a large jyield. As soon as the land is in plow ing order, select your acre and turn it np deep, very deep. That will be a'good start. We want to see four or five hundred farmers enter this -contest. ...... , ..-. ; ?:? Braye Fire Laddies. ' Lynch & Co., Penn & Holstein successors to GL Penn & Son, Trio of Public Servants. !Ye present the third installment of county officials' this week-a trio of public servants. Mr. W. B. Cogbnrn has just en tered upon his third term as clerk Mr/W. B. Co gb urn . -of court, having served for eight consecutive years in this capacity, always giving entire satisfaction to the people who elected him. Edge field, or any other county in the state for that matter, has never had a more capable and efficient ' clerk of court. Mr. W. G. Onzts, after filling the Mr. W. G. Ouzts unexpired term of his lamented fa ther, Sheriff W. H. Ouzts, entered'-' with the new year upon his first full term as sheriff of Edgefield county. Suffice it to say that, this worthy son of an honored sire is ever alert, ac Mr. J. R. Timm er man. tive, faithful and fearless in the dis charge of the duties that pertain to this the-chief executive office of the county. In a few days the Governor will commission Mr. J. Ransom Tim merman as county auditor.- This being an appointive instead of an elective office, Mr. Timmerman did not receive his commission at the beginning of the new year as di"1 some of th? other county officials. The newly chosen auditor is a young man who is just entering upon his public career, but being affable in manner, generous by nature, strong ly endowed intellectually and of unimpeachable integrity, we are confident that he will measure up to the highest expectations of his friends in the discharge of every duty. Blank Books. Start the new year right by com ing to us for your blank books. We have a large stock of ledgers, jour-' nals, cash and day books. W. E. Lynch & Co. Notice to Taxpayers. . ' The county Auditor's office will be open for the purpose of receiving tax returns from the 1st day of January to the 20th of February 1909 inclusive, after which date the law imposes the addition of fifty cents penalty to the dollar for neglect or refusal to make returns. The law requires a full return of all property owned or managed by husband, guardian, executor, ad ministrator or in a fiduciary capaci ty^ and to note all (transfers of real estate. All male citizens between the agfs of twenty one and sixty years of age are required to pay a poll tax oif one dollar each, except those exempt by law. J. R. Timmerman,, County Auditor. Enter the com growers' contest. ?y ; Successful Stock Raises. Mr. Julian R. Strother set6 a -erTr worthy example to his broth er farmers in that he raises all of the stock he needs on the farm. Pie drove, a pair of fine home-raised mules to town several days ago that were far^ superior to any western stock that is shipped here. One of tho mules, a tall, weil-<leveloped black mule, was only two and a half years of age, yet from its size and general appearance the . casual observer would have estimated its age at twice that number -of years. This shows that the best horses and mules to be found can be grown right here in Edgefield county. Every farmer should raise at least one colt every year. The county fair will stimulate stock raising through out the county. Union Meeting Program. The union meeting of the second division will-* meet with Horn's Creek church on Saturday the 30th, of Janhary. Dear Sir: I regret, to say that I have been unable since your ap pointment as County Treasurer, and am still unable, to secure the servi ces of an expert accountant, ex perienced in the matter of settle ment of taxes who could go Edge field and make a settlement as be tween you and Dr. Pattison, the late County Treasurer. After consultation with the Gov ernor, I suggest that you defer the actual collecting of any taxes or the actual exercises of any of the other duties of your office until such a settlement can be made as will pro tect the interest of all parties con cerned. In order to avoid any injury to the tax payers, the Governor has approved my ordering an exten sion of the time for the'payment of taxes in Edgefield county, without penalty, until the 1st of.-March. I will endeavor to procure thel services of an expert accountant I and have the settlement made as soon as possible., - Yours very truly, A. W. Jones, Comptroller General. E LECTRIf?
